John C. McAndrews Pro Bono Service Award 2008

The Illinois State Bar Association has established the John C. McAndrews Pro Bono Service Award to honor those members of the profession that have shown extraordinary commitments to providing free legal services to the income eligible or expanding the availability of legal services to the income eligible.

Deadline for submission is Monday, March 31, 2008.

Award Criteria:

The selection of the recipient will be based on the following factors:

  • An affiliated bar association which is located in the State of Illinois.
  • An affiliated bar association which encourages and supports, through written policy, pro bono involvement by its members.
  • An affiliated bar association which encourages its members to meet ABA Standards for Pro Bono involvement.
  • An affiliated bar association which has made this contribution through organized pro bono programs, including programs run in partnership with legal services programs, legal aid societies or free standing bar association pro bono programs.
  • An affiliated bar association which has done significant work in developing and implementing innovated approaches to the delivery of pro bono legal services to the income eligible or has developed or adopted a free legal clinic.
  • An affiliated bar association which has worked on legislation that enhances the availability of legal services to the income eligible.
  • An affiliated bar association which has demonstrated a commitment to the provision or enhancement of pro bono legal services that in the judgment of the Committee is particularly worthy of recognition.

  • A law firm which has its principle practice in Illinois but is not a firm that has as its primary purpose the provision of free legal services.
  • A law firm which encourages and supports; through written policy, pro bono involvement by both associates and partners.
  • A law firm which strives to meet ABA Standards for Pro Bono involvement.
  • A law firm which has made this contribution through organized pro bono programs, including legal services programs, legal aid societies, local bar association pro bono programs, etc.
  • A law firm which has successfully litigated pro bono cases that enhance the provision of other services to the income eligible.
  • A law firm which has done significant work in developing and implementing innovative approaches to the delivery of volunteer legal services to the income eligible, or has developed or adopted a free legal clinic.
  • A law firm which has worked on legislation that enhances the availability of legal services to the income eligible.

Award Criteria:

The selection of the recipient will be based on the following factors:

  • A lawyer who practices in Illinois but is not employed full-time by an organization that has as its primary purpose the provision of free legal services to the income eligible.
  • A lawyer who has provided direct delivery of legal services in civil matters, with no expectation receiving a fee, to a client or client group that does not have the resources to employ compensated counsel.
  • A lawyer who has contributed significant time to provide free legal services to the income eligible, e.g. 75-100 hours per year.
  • A lawyer who has made this contribution through organized pro bono programs, including legal services programs, legal aid societies, local bar association pro bono programs, etc, or has had a long term consistent involvement in pro bono activities over the years.
  • A lawyer who has successfully litigated pro bono cases that enhance the provision of other services to the income eligible.
  • A lawyer who has done significant work in developing and implementing innovative approaches to the delivery of volunteer legal services to the income eligible.
  • A lawyer who has worked on legislation that enhances the availability of legal services to the income eligible.
