It's ISBA Election Season!

Spring is almost here, and that means it's election season at the ISBA. There are contested races for third vice-president and the Cook County and Under 37 Outside Cook board of governors seats. This special election section of the Journal has background about the candidates to help you make an informed decision.

Ballots will be distributed soon. Paper ballots will be mailed and e-ballots will be emailed on March 28. Voting concludes April 29 at 4:30 p.m. CDT. All members with dues paid up by March 1 of this year are eligible to vote for races in their area.

Third VP. Candidates for third vice-president are chosen from Cook County and downstate (outside Cook) in alternating years. This is a Cook County year, and the contestants are Stephen M. Komie of Chicago and David B. Sosin of Orland Park. Learn more about them by reading their bios on page 15. This year's third VP winner will serve as the ISBA's president in 2019-20.

Board and assembly. Nine members of the ISBA Board of Governors will be chosen this year. Three incumbents, Elizabeth M. Rochford of Waukegan in Area 2 (Circuits 17, 19, and 22), Keith E. Fruehling of Champaign-Urbana in Area 5 (Circuits 5, 6, and 11), and Carey C. Gill of Carbondale in Area 7 (Circuits 1, 2, and 4) are running unopposed.

In the contested Cook County board race, Chicagoans Nora Doherty, Bridget Duignan, Albert E. "Al" Durkin, Ava George Stewart, Pamela Sakowicz Menaker, Damian Ortiz, and E. Kenneth Wright, Jr., are running for five open seats. For the Outside Cook Under 37 seat, Chantelle Porter of Lombard and Angelica "Angel" Wawrzynek of Mattoon face each other. All assembly seats this year are uncontested. The candidate list appears on page 19. All successful candidates - for third VP, board, and assembly - take office in June.

I will attack "Legal Shield" and other document generators who practice law without a license. I will develop CLE to help members adapt to new e-filing requirements adopted by the Supreme Court. I will push for member benefits to maintain our current membership and aid in the recruitment of seasoned and young lawyers to join our ranks. David B. Sosin, Orland Park. Current ISBA treasurer. Founding partner of Sosin & Arnold, Ltd. Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Illinois and a Juris Doctor from Northwestern University School of Law in 1972. Active member of ISBA, six-term member of the ISBA Assembly, current member of the Board of Governors, honored as a 2011 Laureate of the ISBA Academy of Illinois Lawyers, recipient of ISBA Board of Governors Award, and David Hilliard Award for Committee Service from the CBA. Facilitator for Illinois Supreme Court Town Hall meetings on Professionalism. Past chair, ISBA committees for Bar Services, Minority and Women's Participation and Insurance Program, and bar leadership programs for Affiliated Bar Associations. Facilitator for Young Lawyers Division's Long Range Planning conference. Past president, Illinois Bar Foundation; instrumental in expanding both fundraising and funding of Foundation programs. Board of Governors – Cook County
CONTESTED - (5 to be elected)

Nora Doherty, Chicago. Attorney focused on real estate law at Steven B. Pearlman & Associates where she has developed a state-wide practice including administrative law and litigation. B.A., Loyola University Chicago (2001); J.D., Loyola University School of Law (2005). She currently represents Cook County on the Assembly of the ISBA.  She is the vice chair of the ISBA's State and Local Taxation Section Council (SALT) and is a member of the Standing Committee on Legal Technology where she is focused on improving the legislative review process for all sections and committees of the ISBA. As a member of SALT, Nora has been very active in combating the unlicensed practice of law state-wide. Nora has also contributed extensively to the leadership of the Chicago Bar Association (CBA) where she has served on and chaired several committees and appeared in the Bar Show. She writes a chapter on Specific Objection Lawsuits for the Illinois Institute of Continuing Legal Education (IICLE), has lectured numerous times for bar and other voluntary associations, and she teaches for the Illinois Property Assessment Institute. Nora is the founding president of the Women's Property Tax Association. Issue Statement: I will fight to establish a litigation fund so that the ISBA can bring civil suits now that it has standing to combat the unlicensed practice of law. I will focus on attracting, engaging, valuing, and retaining younger lawyers. I will seek to make the ISBA more relevant and more affordable to government lawyers whose contributions to the bar so often exceed the benefits that they receive. I will pursue a technological solution to the dated method by which our sections review legislation. I have never mistaken activity for accomplishment and I will be an efficient leader with respect for the time of others.

Bridget Duignan, Chicago.  Partner at Latherow and Duignan where she focuses her practice on plaintiff's medical malpractice, construction negligence and personal injury. She served as assistant counsel to the Speaker of the Illinois House of Representatives Michael J. Madigan and formerly worked in insurance defense. B.A., Illinois State University; J.D., The John Marshall Law School. She is finishing her term on the ISBA Board of Governors (Under 37); she serves on the Standing Committee on Budget and Audit and is board liaison to Tort Law Section Council, Employee Benefits Section Council and the Standing Committee on Women and the Law. Bridget is also active in the Women's Bar Association of Illinois where she currently co-chairs the Legislative Committee. She previously co-chaired the Tort Litigation Committee of the Chicago Bar Association and served as its legislative liaison in 2012-2013 and 2013-2014. She was appointed to the Board of Managers for the Illinois Trial Lawyers Association where she also co-chairs the Membership Committee and serves on the Legislative and Medical Malpractice committees. She is a member of the American Association for Justice. She was a monthly columnist for the Chicago Daily Law Bulletin; Women, Law and Politics and has authored legal publications for the Trial Journal (ITLA), Tort Trends (ISBA) and the Tort Reporter (CBA). Bridget has lectured at seminars given by the Illinois State Bar Association, Illinois Trial Lawyers Association and Lorman Education Services. She was rated by Super Lawyers as a 'Rising Star' from 2013 through 2015, and rated as a 'Super Lawyer' in 2016.  Bridget was born and raised in Chicago's south side, and is married to fellow ISBA member Jose Rivero with three children, Jose (6), Finian (4) and Ela (1). Issue Statement: Young members with different experiences and new ideas make for a stronger, more robust organization.

Albert E. "Al" Durkin, Chicago. Incumbent. Mr. Durkin is the managing partner and founding member of Miroballi Durkin & Rudin, LLC in Chicago, Illinois. He has over 35 years of experience as an active personal injury litigator. He has been selected by his peers continuously since 2001 as a Leading Lawyer in the field of general personal injury and professional malpractice and in addition currently sits as a member of the Leading Lawyer's Network Advisory Board. Mr. Durkin holds an AV rating from Martindale-Hubbell Company. Al has been an active member of the ISBA community having held several important positions within the Association. He is completing his first term as a member of the Board of Governors (elected in 2013) after serving three terms in the Assembly. He currently sits on the Board's Standing Committee on Scope and Correlation. In addition to his elected offices, Al has served the ISBA in several different capacities including chair of the Standing Committee on Judicial Evaluations Cook County and Tort Law Section Council where he has been a member since 2001. Al believes strongly in the importance of section councils and committees of the ISBA and has served as liaison to the DLC, CLC, SLGC and CPC. In addition to his extensive involvement with the ISBA, Mr. Durkin has maintained his membership in the Chicago Bar, Women's Bar and Illinois Trial Lawyers Associations. He is a 1977 graduate of the DePaul University College of Law. Issue Statement: As a Governor, Al has advocated the importance of section councils and committees and the need for transparency in the government of the Association. In addition to the above, he was a vocal opponent to contraction of the assembly and board promoting instead the need for greater participation of association members in ISBA sections and Assembly.

Ava George Stewart, Chicago. Criminal defense attorney. Education: B.A. and M.S.C., Northwestern University; J.D., University of Illinois. If elected, I will develop and implement innovative engagement programs to increase recruitment, membership participation and satisfaction, and improve sponsorship.

Pamela Sakowicz Menaker, Chicago. Communications Partner, Clifford Law Offices. B.S.J., M.S.J., Northwestern University, Medill School of Journalism; J.D., Loyola University School of Law (1984). She served two terms on the ISBA Assembly, is on the Illinois Bar Journal Editorial Board and member of the Standing Committee on Marketing and Communications. She serves on the Chicago Bar Association Editorial Board of the Chicago Bar Record, the Judicial Evaluation Committee and the Public Affairs Committee. She has served on the American Bar Association's Litigation News and Litigation Journal Editorial Boards. She served on the Host Committee for the ABA's Annual Meeting in Chicago in 2015 and was appointed by the president of the ABA to serve on the ABA Task Force on Human Trafficking (2012-2014) and now serves on the Section of Litigation Membership and Marketing Committee. Damian Ortiz, Chicago. Director of the Pro Bono Program at The John Marshall Law School. Teaches Illinois Civil Procedure, Pro Bono Clinic, fair housing/lending, civil rights and legal writing. B.S., Loyola University Chicago; J.D. and L.L.M., The John Marshall Law School. He has dedicated his legal career to teaching, public service and representing victims of civil rights violations. He supervises attorneys and law students at the Pro Bono Clinic and litigates civil rights, prisoners' rights, foreclosure cases in state, and federal courts. One of his most noteworthy cases is Lackey v. Godinez, 815 N.E.2d 822 (Ill.  App. 1st Dist. 2004), which provided low income families with housing rights. Activities: ISBA Standing Committee on Judicial Evaluations (2003-present). He is active in the Hispanic Lawyers Association of Illinois, Hispanic National Bar Association, American Bar Association, and the Chicago Bar Association's Judicial Committee. Chantelle A. Porter, Lombard. Senior Associate at A. Traub & Associates practicing family law, juvenile, DCFS, estate planning, estate administration, guardianship, and civil and criminal litigation. Chantelle is a court approved Guardian ad litem in the 18th Judicial Circuit and was appointed as a Juvenile Conflict attorney in the 18th Judicial Circuit. She began the practice of law in 2006 as an assistant public guardian in Cook County. She has also been an assistant public defender in DuPage County where she was supervisor of the Juvenile Division. She received her B.A. degree from The Ohio State University. She received her J.D. from DePaul University College of Law. While at DePaul, Chantelle received her Family Law Certificate and was the recipient of the Public Interest Law Association Grant, and the Schiller DuCanto & Fleck Family Law Center Grant. Chantelle's bar association leadership includes: Board of Directors of the DuPage County Bar Association (2009-2015) and past president of the DuPage County Association of Women Lawyers (2013-2014). Angelica "Angel" Wawrzynek, Mattoon. Incumbent.  Angel is an associate at Tapella & Eberspacher LLC. Angel attended high school in Oak Park, Illinois; earned her B.S. in Mathematics from the University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana; and graduated cum laude from the University of Illinois College of Law. She has family in Rockford, Illinois; has settled in Mattoon, Illinois; and practices virtually everywhere south of I-80. She focuses primarily on civil litigation and especially personal injury cases. In 2012, Angel received the ECIWAA Award for Service to the Community and the following year she was honored with the ISBA Young Lawyer of the Year Award. Since 2014, Angel has been named a Top 100 Trial Lawyer by The National Trial Lawyers Association as well as an Emerging Lawyer by the Leading Lawyers organization. Currently, Angel is the treasurer/secretary of the Coles-Cumberland Bar Association and is the chair of the 5th Judicial Circuit Pro Bono Committee. Angel is a past member of the ISBA Young Lawyers Division Council (2010-2015), and was appointed to the ISBA Lawyers Feeding Illinois Task Force and the ISBA Board Committee on Governance. Carey C. Gill, Carbondale. Incumbent. She is an associate attorney with the firm Barrett, Twomey, Broom, Hughes & Hoke, LLP, where she concentrates on estate planning, probate litigation, eminent domain, civil litigation, federal tax and other areas of practice.  She has served as a Special Assistant Attorney General for land acquisition for the Illinois Department of Transportation and Illinois Department of Natural Resources since 2005. Ms. Gill received her Bachelor's Degree in 1998 from Monmouth College, graduating summa cum laude; and her Juris Doctorate in 2001 from Southern Illinois School of Law, graduating summa cum laude. Ms. Gill finished serving her first term on the ISBA Board of Governors and has been the Board liaison to the Standing Committee on Continuing Legal Education, Real Estate Law Section Council and Business Advice and Financial Planning Section Council. She has previously served on the ISBA Assembly, ISBA Standing Committee on Continuing Legal Education and Standing Committee on ISBA Budget and Audit. Ms. Gill is a past president of the Jackson County Bar Association and is currently the Committee chairperson for the JCBA Continuing Legal Education Committee. She is a past officer of the Southern Illinois American Inns of Court. Ms. Gill is a frequent lecturer on estate planning and living trusts. She has written for the Southern Illinois University Law Journal: "You've Got Mail: Privacy Rights in the Workplace," Vol. 25, Issue 3; and for the Illinois Institute of Continuing Legal Education: Advising Elderly Clients & Their Families 2008 Edition, 2012 & 2014 Supplements, Chapter 4, "Planning for Incapacity: Powers of Attorney, Living Trusts, and Forms of Ownership." She is married to Doug Gill and is the proud mother of Gabriel and Bethany.
