What I Learned From Teaching Trial Advocacy

 Building on Aristotle’s teachings concerning logos, pathos, and ethos, retired judge Gino L. DiVito continues his five-part series on trial advocacy in November’s Illinois Bar Journal. In Part Two, “The Essential Elements of Persuasion: What To Do and How and Why To Do It,” Judge DiVito reframes Aristotle’s principles as the three Cs—character, competency, and conviction.

A 2018 state law holding repeat gun offenders behind bars longer will be repealed on January 1. Senators tried to extend the law for another year, but House Democrats never called the plan for a vote before the fall veto session ended.

On August 11, 2023, Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker signed HB 3129, a new pay transparency bill, into law. This bill is one of several other recent amendments to the Illinois Equal Pay Act, an Illinois law that, among other things, prohibits employers from paying employees unequal wages based on sex or race for doing the same or substantially similar work.

It’s now a waiting game to see whether or not the Adams County judge who overturned his own guilty verdict in a sexual assault case bench trial almost two years ago will face removal or other sanctions.

A civilian-led police oversight panel voted unanimously Monday to approve a new policy that would ban Chicago cops from “active participation” in hate and extremist groups. The move came after the Chicago Police Department investigated — but took little or no action — against officers who were found to have connections to extremist and anti-government groups, including the Oath Keepers, Proud Boys, and Three Percenters.
