Illinois Supreme Court Announces E-Filing Expansion to Include Quasi-Criminal Cases and E-Citations

The Illinois Supreme Court today announced the expansion of e-filing to include quasi-criminal cases and electronic citations (e-Citations). This expansion beyond civil, criminal, and juvenile cases furthers the Supreme Court’s objective to utilize technology to reduce and streamline processes. It will be done in a permissive manner initially so counties can join as their technology allows.

Illinois Supreme Court Appoints Jennifer Barron as Circuit Judge in DuPage County

Justice Mary K. O’Brien and the Supreme Court of Illinois have announced the appointment of Jennifer L. Barron as a Circuit Judge in the Eighteenth Judicial Circuit, DuPage County. 

Ms. Barron is being appointed to fill the vacancy created by the appointment of Judge Linda E. Davenport to the Third District Appellate Court. The appointment takes effect on February 15, 2023, and will conclude December 2, 2024, following the November 2024 general election. 

Illinois Supreme Court Access to Justice Commission Announces Disability Access Committee

The Illinois Supreme Court Commission on Access to Justice (ATJ Commission) this week announced the formation and inaugural roster of the new Disability Access Committee (Committee). 

The purpose of the new Committee is to guide the ATJ Commission in the development of policies and programming addressing the barriers to equitable access to our courts faced by individuals with disabilities. 

The Do’s and Don’ts of Practicing Law in States Where a Lawyer Is Not Licensed

In Illinois, multi-jurisdictional practice is primarily governed by Supreme Court Rule 5.5. With the advent of the internet, social media, Zoom, and other advanced communication methods, multi-jurisdictional representation has flourished and opened new and exciting avenues for legal practice. Under Rule 5.5, in certain circumstances, lawyers not licensed in Illinois may practice in Illinois without obtaining local counsel or an Illinois license.

Court Operations Resume at Michael A. Bilandic Building Following Elevator Repairs

The Michael A. Bilandic Building is re-opening today as the elevators were returned to service following repairs over the weekend. The State Fire Marshal inspected the site this morning and certified the elevators now meet all code and safety requirements.
