J. Robert Murphy 1923-2015

J. Robert "Bob" MJ. Robert Murphyurphy passed away peacefully at home in Geneva on November 18, 2015, just days before his 92nd birthday. He was born November 26, 1923 in Chicago, to William and Louise (Florence) Murphy. 

Bob graduated from West Aurora High School in 1941 and received a scholarship to Harvard University. While at Harvard, in 1943, Bob was inducted into the U.S. Army. He served in the Army Air Force for three years before returning to Harvard to resume his education, entering and attending Harvard Law School from 1946 to 1948. Bob then returned to Aurora, where he opened his law practice in 1949. 

Bob married Teresa (Chambers) on September 4, 1950, and together, they had six children. 

Bob served local families and family businesses in the general practice of law including concentration in areas of construction law, estate planning, and civil litigation for more than 60 years. Bob co-founded and practiced with the law firm of Murphy, Griffin & Dixon, in the 1960s and 1970s. From 1981 until 2004, Bob practiced with his son, Jim, as partners in Murphy & Murphy PC. 

As a young lawyer interested in politics, Bob served as local campaign chair for John F. Kennedy during the 1960 presidential election campaign. Bob was appointed and served as City of Aurora corporation counsel during the tenure of Mayor Jack Hill. 

During the last 30 years, Bob and Terry spent several weeks each year in Aix-en-Provence, France, where they enjoyed the people, artisans, culture, art, language, and lifestyle of southern France. Bob enjoyed classical music, and daily practiced playing Bach on the piano. 

Bob is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Terry; his children, Jim (Mary) of Aurora, Ann Borel (the late Jean-Louis Borel), of Paris, France, Margaret (Bill) Fehrenbacher, of Oswego, IL; Nora, of San Francisco, and Ian of Chicago; his grandchildren, Katy Murphy, James Murphy, Sara Fehrenbacher, Emily (Zachary) Mannix, Floriane Borel and Christopher Barnett; his brother, William C. Murphy, of Aurora; several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. 

Bob was preceded in death by his son, Brendan, in 2014. 

Services have been held. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in his name to CASA Kane County, Kane County Courthouse, 100 S. Third St., Suite 460, Geneva, IL 60134 or to Noah's Hope, P.O. Box 54, Downers Grove, IL 60515. 

The family wishes to thank Dr. Ebrahim Amani; caregivers, Grace Pryzybilski and Bhawani Maskey, and Suki Singh, RN, of Covenant Care Hospice, and others who helped with Bob's care, for their considerate and compassionate care during the last months of Bob's life.
