Neil, as he was known to his family, was born on June 2, 1931, in Knox, IN, to Harriette Fitzpatrick McBride and David J. McBride. The eldest of seven children, he attended St. Ignatius High School, where he excelled academically. He graduated in 1949, and received the Cardinal Stritch Scholarship to the University of Notre Dame. Neil was a Captain in the US Army Reserves, called to active duty in 1956 and again in 1961.
While attending the wedding of a friend, Neil met Rita O'Leary, and on June 25, 1955, they married. They settled in Oak Park, IL, where they raised six children. Also in 1955, Neil joined the law firm of Ross Hardies O'Keefe Babcock McDugald and Parsons (now part of McGuire Woods), where he eventually became a Managing Partner. In 1987, he and Rita moved to a new home in Winfield, IL. He later retired after practicing law for 41 years.
Throughout his life, Neil was active in his church and community, including serving as Parish School Board President at St. Edmund School, and as Trustee of Fenwick High School in Oak Park, IL. In his retirement, he enjoyed his family, trips to Ireland, and providing advice and support to his siblings, children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. He also enjoyed Notre Dame football, the White Sox, and the Chicago Bears.
