John Bernard “JB” Cashion 1937 - 2022

John Bernard ("JB") Cashion, age 85, of Northfield, IL, and Vero Beach, FL, formerly of Winnetka, passed away peacefully in his home, surrounded by family, on Wednesday, August 24, 2022.

John was the devoted and beloved husband of Mary Ann (nee Sullivan) for 56 years. John was preceded in death by his parents, John and Cicely (nee Delany) Cashion and his 3 younger brothers, Gerry (Barbara), Jim (Carolyn), and Joe.

Most loving father of Amy (Deta) Itaya, Laurie (Mike) Cavalier, Matt (Carrie), Dan (Carolyn), Colleen (Mike) Wilkins, and Patrick. Proud grandfather of Jack, Emma, and Nick Cavalier; Conor and Katie Itaya; Carly, Stella, and Teddy Cashion; Lilah, Cassidy, and Cole Cashion; and Timmy, PJ, Patrick, and Johnny Wilkins.

John grew up in Evanston, IL, and attended St. Mary's elementary school, Loyola Academy, and received his undergraduate degree from the University of Notre Dame, and his law degree from Northwestern University. He began his law career in Chicago with the personal injury firm of Philip Corboy. It was around this time John met the love of his life and future wife of 56 years, Mary Ann. After a whirlwind four month courtship, he proposed to her on the campus of Notre Dame, and they settled in the Old Town neighborhood of Chicago, where they happily started a family, and he started his own personal injury law firm. They soon moved to the suburbs - Wilmette and then Winnetka - where they raised six children and were active members of St. Francis and Faith Hope & Charity parishes.

John was a respected lawyer and a tireless and fierce advocate for his clients, often risking his own financial future in the name of justice. He won many landmark cases, both individual and class action. In 1981, he prevailed in an Illinois Supreme Court victims' rights case which continues to be a bedrock principle of Illinois law. He was proud to have served as President of the Illinois Trial Lawyers Association from 1986-87. For 40+ years, he was a well known figure on North LaSalle Street and in the Cook County courthouse, always in a dapper suit, with a smile on his face, a charge in his step, and cash in his pocket to hand out to those less fortunate along his path.

Equally as important to him as his law career was his devotion to the University of Notre Dame. He served as Alumni Class of '59 President for many years and stayed closely connected and devoted to his ND friends for all of his life. He had many passions: he was a voracious reader, a 'wannabe' architect and radio DJ ("WJBC"), an avid skier, and a tennis player. He loved music and dancing and appreciated a good Guinness. He was an eternal optimist and was extremely generous with both his time and resources. He was a man of great faith who knew how lucky he was to be blessed with his large, loving family. In his later years, he was happiest when surrounded by his 15 adoring grandchildren.

Above all else, he loved his wife, who never left his side. His legacy will endure, and he will be forever remembered in our hearts.
