Daniel Ebner 1977-2024
Daniel S. Ebner, 47, of Chicago, IL, passed away of heart complications on March 14, 2024.
Although Dan’s unexpected illness manifested while traveling away from home, Dan was watched over by loved ones who traveled to his side, and he passed while in the thoughts of the many who loved him.
He was born to Judit and Charles Ebner on March 5, 1977, in Columbus, OH. After graduating from Upper Arlington High School in Upper Arlington, OH, he attended Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH, where he earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in chemical engineering.
In 2004, he graduated from Harvard Law School where he worked as a research assistant for now-Senator Elizabeth Warren. After graduating, he clerked for Hon. Samuel “Hardy” Mays, Jr. in the United States District Court for the Western District of Tennessee.
Dan co-founded Prather Ebner Wilson LLP with his husband Ray Prather in 2010 focusing on trust and estate law. He was active in the American Bar Association’s Real Property Trust and Estate Law Section co-chairing the Probate and Fiduciary Litigation Committee and the Corporate Sponsorship Committee. In 2020, he was elected to the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC) where he served on the Fiduciary Litigation Committee and the DEI Committee.
Kind and selfless, quick-witted with a dry sense of humor, Dan showcased his affability and intelligence in many ways, but he was most proud of his cooking. He loved to throw large, elaborate dinner parties for his family, friends, and acquaintances. To the enjoyment of those he cooked for, he liked trying new recipes and would quickly master different cooking techniques. If you were in the kitchen and had an interest, Dan might hand you a knife and teach you a new skill.
Dan and Ray met in 2007 through their volunteer work with Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund, and they were married on September 10, 2016. They loved to travel together and to grow their law firm.
Dan is survived by Ray, his father Charles Ebner of Columbus, OH, and his many friends, all of whom are deeply saddened by his passing. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Lambda Legal.
