Illinois Supreme Court Justice Mary K. O’Brien Elected to American Law Institute

Illinois Supreme Court Justice Mary K. O’Brien has been elected as a new member of the American Law Institute (ALI), the leading independent organization in the United States producing scholarly work to clarify, modernize, and otherwise improve the law. 

Justice O’Brien is among those new members selected from confidential nominations submitted by ALI members who will bring their expertise to ALI’s work. View the full list of newly elected members.  

Justice O’Brien was elected to the Illinois Supreme Court on November 8, 2022, for the Third Appellate District. Prior to election to the Supreme Court, Justice O’Brien served nearly twenty years as a Third District Appellate Court Justice following appointment in December 2003.

Founded in 1923, the ALI is a private, independent, nonprofit organization that publishes Restatements of the Law, Principles of the Law, and Model Codes to further its mission to promote the better administration of justice. ALI's original incorporators included former President and later Chief Justice of the Supreme Court William Howard Taft, Chief Justice Charles Evans Hughes, and former US Secretary of State Elihu Root.
