Adults With Disabilities Have Sex
Of course, adults with disabilities have sex. A 70-year-old in a nursing home wants to feel young again. A newly turned 18-year-old wants to be an average young adult. A 30-year-old with a spouse dreams of starting a family. But the decisions an adult with a disability can make are regulated by courts, guardians, doctors, attorneys, and often other family members, notes Katharine Pancewicz in her September Illinois Bar Journal article, “Adults With Disabilities Have Sex.” Pancewicz shows why these regulations were put in place for their protection, as adults with disabilities are considered among the most vulnerable. Yet, the long history of regulation and restriction of these adults in the U.S. and Illinois is complex, and not all of it good.
