Karen Kies DeGrand was installed as the President of the Appellate Lawyers Association (ALA) this week. The ALA is an organization of Illinois lawyers whose practices are focused on the courts of review. Ms. DeGrand is a partner at Donohue Brown Mathewson & Smyth and leads the firm's appellate practice group. She has briefed and/or argued cases in a wide array of substantive matters before the appellate and supreme courts of Illinois, as well as in the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals and in the Wisconsin and Indiana appellate and supreme courts. Ms. DeGrand also writes Quick Take reviews of Illinois Supreme Court opinions for this blog.

The Illinois State Bar Association and the Appellate Lawyers Association will co-host a Candidates Forum on Friday, Feb. 24, 2012 at the ISBA's Chicago Regional Office, 20 S. Clark, Ste. 900. This event will run from noon-1:30 p.m. and is free to the public.
Each appellate candidate will be permitted time to speak about his or her qualifications and reasons for seeking the position, followed by questions from the audience.

The Appellate Lawyers Association will host a luncheon featuring Illinois Supreme Court Justice Rita Garman on Wednesday, Oct. 20 at noon. The luncheon, titled "Beyond Opinions: Petitions, Motions, Writs and Rules of the Illinois Supreme Court," will be held at the Union League Club, 65 W. Jackson.
