Raymond H. Ray" Mason, 93, who founded Morton's first law office, passed away on Jan. 13 at Apostolic Christian Restmor in Morton.
He received his bachelor's degree, in marketing, in 1942 from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where, during the big band era, he played drums for four years with the Johnny Bruce Orchestra.
A World War II and Korean War Army veteran, he served from 1942 to 1946 and from 1951 to 1952, graduating from Officer Candidate School and the Command and General Staff School, where he prepared for the anticipated invasion of Japan. He attained the rank of Captain. He served in the Army Reserve from 1946 to 1951.
A lifetime member, former president and 50-year honoree of the Tazewell County Bar Association, he also was a lifetime member of the American and Illinois State Bar Associations and a past member of the Illinois State Bar Association's Committee on Judicial Advisory Polls. The ISBA named him a Senior Counsellor in 1999.

The Illinois Supreme Court announced Tuesday that Thomas E. Griffith, Jr., an attorney for 25 years, has been appointed a circuit judge in the Sixth Judicial Circuit. Mr. Griffith was appointed to fill the Circuit Court vacancy created by the November 3, 2010 retirement of Judge Theodore E. Paine. The appointment is effective February 4, 2011 and will expire December 3, 2012. Justice Rita B. Garman recommended the appointment of Mr. Griffith after a review process by a special citizen screening committee. The committee unanimously recommended Mr. Griffith to fill the at-large circuit court vacancy. Mr. Griffith graduated cum laude from Millikin University with a B.A. degree in History. He received his juris doctor degree from Tulsa University Law School in 1985. Before his appointment to the bench, Mr. Griffith worked for 23 years as a partner with the law firm of Erickson, Davis, Murphy, Johnson, Griffith & Walsh, Ltd. in Decatur. From 1985 to 1987, Mr. Griffith served as Macon County assistant state’s attorney. He has been a member of the Capital Litigation Trial Bar since September 2002. A resident of Decatur, Mr. Griffith is married with four children. The Sixth Judicial Circuit is comprised of six counties: Champaign, DeWitt, Douglas, Macon, Moultrie and Piatt.

The Illinois Supreme Court announced today that the Ninth Judicial Circuit judges voted to select Heidi A. Benson as an associate judge of the Ninth Judicial Circuit. Ms. Benson received her undergraduate degree in 1994 from Knox College, Galesburg, and her Juris Doctor in 1997 from the University of Illinois. The Illinois Supreme Court has announced the appointments of Michael L. Stroh and James D. Orel to the position of associate judge. Stroh will reside in the 11th Judicial Circuit and Orel in the 18th. Mr. Stroh received his undergraduate degree in 1993 from Southern Illinois University and his Juris Doctor in 1996 from Southern Illinois University. He is currently affiliated with the Woodford County State’s Attorney’s Office in Eureka. Former ISBA Director of Publications Virgil Everett Tipton Jr. passed away on Nov. 19 at Rosewood Care Center in Edwardsville. Mr. Tipton was a WWII veteran and received his journalism degree from the University of Missouri in 1948. He then moved to Springfield and began working at the State Journal-Register. Madalyn Maxwell died Saturday, November 6, 2010 at St. John’s Hospital, Springfield after a brief illness. Ms. Maxwell was born in Nashville, Illinois on January 9, 1926, the daughter of (Illinois Supreme Court Justice) Ralph L. Maxwell and Beulah House Maxwell. She attended schools in Urbana and Nashville, Whitworth College in Brookhaven, Mississippi, and received her law degree from the University of Illinois in Urbana. She married Thomas H. McGary in Springfield on July 4, 1968. He preceded her in death in 1999.

Susan H. Brandt, 59, Bloomington, died at 7:23 a.m. Tuesday (Nov. 9, 2010) at Advocate BroMenn Medical Center, Normal. Susan was born Dec. 20, 1950, in Bloomington, the daughter of William R. and Jean Kuhle Brandt. Susan grew up as a member of Second Presbyterian Church and had attended the Unitarian Universalist Church, both in Bloomington. She graduated from Bloomington High School in 1969, received her B.A. degree in economics from the University of Colorado in 1973 and her J.D. from the University of Georgia in 1977. Susan was a partner at Livingston, Barger, Brandt and Schroeder Law Firm, Bloomington. She was a member of the Illinois Bar Association, the Illinois Association of Defense Trial Counsel and the McLean County Bar Association. She also helped organize the Women’s Lawyer Association. Her memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Second Presbyterian Church, Bloomington, with the Rev. Susan Baller-Shepard officiating. A private family burial will be in Funks Grove Cemetery, Funks Grove. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Carmody-Flynn Williamsburg Funeral Home, Bloomington. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Community Cancer Center, 407 E. Vernon Ave., Normal, IL 61761. She is survived by one son, Samuel H. Brandt, Bloomington; her father, William R.
