On Wednesday, December 9th, the Public Interest Law Initiative (PILI) will host its Annual Awards Luncheon, an event that celebrates the very best aspects of the legal profession: the generosity, expertise and commitment of lawyers, law students, legal professionals, law firms and corporations dedicating themselves to serving low-income clients in need.
This year, PILI is proud to honor the following four award recipients:- Distinguished Public Service Award: Illinois Supreme Court Chief Justice Rita B. Garman
- Distinguished PILI Fellow Alumni Award: Jordan Heinz, Kirkland & Ellis LLP
- Distinguished PILI Intern Alumni Award: Cynthia Cornelius, Cabrini Green Legal Aid
- Pro Bono Initiative Award: United Airlines
PILI’s Annual Awards Luncheon will be held from 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. at the Palmer House Hilton, 17 East Monroe Street, in Chicago. Sponsored by over 50 law firms, corporations, foundations and law schools, this event will be attended by nearly 500 members of the Illinois legal community, including firm and corporate attorneys, members of the judiciary and government sector, law school deans, professors and students, and staff members from PILI’s many partner legal service organizations across the state. Please join us at the 18th Annual ISBA YLD Holiday Party. Not only will there be warm appetizers, an open bar, dancing, and an opportunity to meet young lawyers from across the state, the event benefits a great cause: the Children’s Assistance Fund.
Initially created to assist with the opening of children's waiting rooms in courthouses across the State of Illinois, the IBF/YLD Children's Assistance Fund has since grown, and now provides funding to organizations across the State of Illinois that provide legal assistance to children, maintain children's waiting rooms in courthouses, work to reduce recidivism of juveniles, and/or work to reduce the incidents of domestic violence in families with children.
The YLD has distributed nearly $300,000 in grants through the Children's Assistance Fund over the past sixteen years, due, in large part, to the widespread support and participation in our annual Holiday Party. We hope that you will help us continue this worthy tradition by joining us in person or, if you cannot attend, by contributing to the cause.

The 100th birthday of the Madison County Courthouse in Edwardsville featured a presentation by Third Judicial Circuit Chief Judge David Hylla of framed Declarations of Independence hand-rolled from the plates at the Bureau of Printing and Engraving. The circuit judges and the Madison County Bar Association were the donors of one framed declaration for each circuit judge's courtroom and one for the lobby of the 100-year-old courthouse. Circuit Clerk Mark Von Nida spoke of the history and mysteries from the courthouse following the dinner held on the first floor atrium of the courthouse sponsored by the Madison County Historical Society.
Pictured at the 'Dining in History' event held in the Madison County Courthouse on Nov. 8 are (from left) Supreme Court Justice Lloyd Karmeier, Von Nida and Hylla.
