Join Judge Anthony A. Iosco in Washington D.C. on Monday, June 18, 2012, for admission to the U.S. Supreme Court. Any attorney who has been a member of the Illinois Bar for at least 3 years is eligible for membership. Call Judge Iosco at (847) 818-2501 ASAP for more details. The ISBA has space for up to 50 members to be admitted to the U.S. Supreme Court every two years. The next ISBA trip will be on June 3, 2013.

Illinois Supreme Court Justice Mary Jane Theis will receive the Northwest Suburban Bar Association’s 2012 Public Service Award at the association’s Judges’ Night April 26. Reservations are requested by April 19.
The event will be at Rosewood Banquets, 9421 W. Higgins Road, Rosemont. Cocktails (open bar) and hors d’oeuvres will be available beginning at 6 p.m., with dinner (with a choice of beef, chicken, salmon or a vegetarian entree) served at 7:30 p.m.
The association also will recognize the recipient of the 2012 Honorable Timothy C. Evans Scholarship.
Cost is $150 for members and $200 for non-members until April 19, after which the price increases to $165 and $215, respectively. Judges are guests of the NWSBA.
Justice Theis has served at every level of the Judiciary in the state of Illinois. She was appointed an associate judge in Cook County in 1983. She served there for five years, before being elected in 1988 to the Circuit Court, where she was assigned to the Criminal and Chancery divisions. She presided over hundreds of trials involving murder, robbery, sexual assault and other serious felonies, and also handled civil cases ranging from mortgage foreclosures, to class action cases and other multimillion-dollar lawsuits.
She served for 17 years on the Appellate Court, including several terms as presiding judge. When Chief Justice Thomas R. Fitzgerald retired from the Illinois Supreme Court in 2010, the Court appointed Justice Theis to serve the remainder of his term. In March 2012, she won the Democratic primary election for the seat and will run in the general election in November.

On Friday, March 30, 2012, the men of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., will host a reception celebrating the Honorable Judge Carl Anthony Walker’s induction into its Distinguished Service Chapter, at the Metropolitan Club of Chicago. Several international officers of the fraternity and local dignitaries are expected to attend.
The Distinguished Service Chapter is the highest honor bestowed on a member that has been active in the Fraternity for at least 10 years and who has distinguished himself with outstanding contributions and extraordinary service to the Fraternity and/or in his respective communities. Membership in the Distinguished Service Chapter must be recommended and approved by the awardees’ Chapter, Region and by the General Board of the Fraternity prior to being voting upon at the International Conclave.
Judge Walker is a native of Chicago. He was appointed to the Circuit Court of Cook County in April of 2006. He is assigned to the Juvenile Justice Division of the Circuit Court of Cook County. Prior to ascending to the Bench, Judge Walker matriculated through the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana, where he received an academic achievement award, and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Accountancy. While in Champaign-Urbana, Judge Walker served as a Resident Advisor, and a student justice of the Judicial Commission. After earning an undergraduate degree in Accountancy, he became a Certified Public Accountant.

Take some time to break away from work and bring your family to a wonderful luncheon. Phi Alpha Delta Law (PAD) Fraternity, International, Chicago Alumni Chapter is hosting a benefit to support the Misericorida-Heart of Mercy home in Chicago on Sunday, March 25.
Misericorida is a 31-acre residential facility that provides services and programs for persons with developmental disabilities. A 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation, it has its own gift shop and fabulous bakery that produces, among other treats, traditional Irish soda bread, which will be served at the corned beef and cabbage luncheon. This fun and very worthwhile fundraising event is scheduled to start around noon on Sunday, March 25th with a buffet luncheon at 1 p.m. Honorary co-chairs for the 2012 St. PADdy’s Day Family Fest will be former Cook County State’s Attorney Richard A. Devine and ISBA Past President John G. O’Brien and retired Judge Sheila Murphy. Misericordia currently serves over 600 children and adults and is operated by the Sisters of Mercy. It is located at 6300 N. Ridge Road in Chicago.

The Illinois State Bar Association's Young Lawyers Division will host its Annual Bean Bag Party and Tournament on Saturday, March 10, from noon to 4 p.m. Please join us in supporting this event to benefit the Illinois Bar Foundation/YLD Children’s Assistance Program. The YLD Children's Assistance Fund is a special fund of the Illinois Bar Foundation, a 501(c)(3) charitable entity.

On Thursday, March 1, 2012, the Women’s Bar Association of Illinois will host its 98th Annual Judicial Reception. The Judicial Reception, which will be held at the Hotel Allegro from 5:00pm to 7:30 p.m., brings together members of the bench and bar to celebrate the achievements of the Illinois judiciary.
This year, the WBAI is pleased to honor two eminent jurists with the presentation of the WBAI’s Mary Heftel Hooton Award: The Honorable Judge Rebecca R. Pallmeyer, of the United States District Court, Northern District of Illinois, and The Honorable Judge Debra B. Walker, of the Circuit Court of Cook County, Domestic Relations Division. Each year, the WBAI recognizes a select number of distinguished jurists who share in the WBAI’s determined commitment to promoting the success of women attorneys and advocacy for women’s interests by presenting them with this award. The award’s namesake, Judge Mary Heftel Hooton, was a First Municipal District Judge and served as President of the WBAI in 1976. In 1993, she kindly bequeathed her estate to the WBAI, enabling the WBAI to acquire and maintain its current offices in the Chicago Bar Association Building. The WBAI imparts the Mary Heftel Hooton Award in her honor.

The Nordic Law Club will celebrate the vernal equinox, an ancient pagan rite of spring, with its annual codfish dinner on Wednesday, March 21, in the Berghoff Restaurant, 17 W. Adams, Chicago.
The organization will honor longtime member Don Schultz and present scholarships to six law students of Scandinavian heritage. The event will begin with a 5:30 p.m. reception, followed at 6:30 p.m. by a smorgasbord of traditional Swedish foods.
