The Re-Connecting the Pathways Conference Steering Committee has honored ISBA Past President Mark D. Hassakis and ISBA Legislative Director James R. Covington III with an award for their advocacy work, particularly as it impacted the time needed to resolve juvenile appellate cases. They were honored in the Adolescent Development and Trauma-Informed Practice category.
The awards were presented in Springfield on Tuesday, June 3.

Justice Lisa Holder White of the 4th District Appellate Court was honored with an Alumni Achievement Award from Lewis University on Sept. 28. Justice White, a 1990 graduate of Lewis, became the first African-American female on the 4th District Appellate Court earlier this year. Honored in recognition of his commitment to equal justice and exemplary career as a civil legal services attorney

NIU College of Law, Zeke Giorgi Legal ClinicDuring its 137th Annual Meeting, the Illinois State Bar Association awarded Bernard H. Shapiro with the Joseph R. Bartylak Memorial Legal Services Award at award luncheon on June 21, 2013. For the last 35 years, Bernard H. Shapiro (Bernie) has dedicated his legal career and devoted his considerable intellect and legal acumen to meeting the basic needs of residents of Northern Illinois in his role as attorney, mentor, advocate, trainer, and Director of Litigation at Prairie State Legal Services (Prairie State).
In her nomination letter, Sarah Megan, who also serves as Director of Litigation at Prairie State, writes that Bernie is “the lynchpin of our legal aid program,” “the soul of our organization,” and “a role model for not only all our staff, but for all legal aid staff.” Ms. Megan explains that Bernie’s fellow attorneys “rely on his superb legal analysis and strategy as well as his pragmatic problem solving skill. We learn from his example of excellence; always focused on achieving our clients’ goals, providing our clients the highest caliber legal services in a most compassionate and respectful way.”

Lawrence Wojcik and Ken Schmetterer, partners in DLA Piper’s Chicago office, received the Pillars of Justice Awards from Appleseed for their pro bono work. They were honored at Appleseed and Chicago Appleseed’s annual Pillars of Justice Awards reception on Wednesday, March 20 at the House of Blues in Chicago.
Lawrence Wojcik received the Pro Bono Champion Award for his more than 30 years of litigation. He has represented children in juvenile courts and researched obstacles that children face leaving juvenile detention and returning to school. He has also advocated for the fair sentencing of children and against juvenile life in prison without the possibility of parole. For more than 30 years, hehas focused his law practice on the defense of auditors, accountants, lawyers and other business entities and professionals. He has handled litigation involving business, securities, tax and intellectual property disputes, including representations before federal, state, and municipal regulators. He has represented clients throughout the country and has tried cases in federal and state courts in several jurisdictions.

ISBA Past President Donald C. Schiller will be honored with DePaul University College of Law's highest award, the 2013 Distinguished Alumni Award. Schiller, a 1966 alumni of the school, is a founding partner with Schiller, DuCanto & Fleck.
Michele Jochner, a fellow partner with Schiller, DuCanto & Fleck will also be honored with the Outstanding Service to the Profession Award.
The awards will be presented at the Law Alumni Awards Dinner on March 7 at the Sofitel Chicago Water Tower.

Stacy Campbell-Viamontes, a Chicago-based attorney in the Defense Litigation Practice at Hinshaw & Culbertson LLP, has been elected President of the Young Professionals Board for the Center for Disability and Elder Law (CDEL) for the 2012-2013 term. She was also chosen to be a member of CDEL's 2013 Winter Benefit Committee. CDEL is a non-profit legal services organization that provides pro bono legal services to low-income seniors and/or persons with disabilities in Cook County.
In addition, Stacy has also been selected to Just The Beginning Foundation’s (JTBF’s) 20 Under 40 List. She will be honored during an event at Northwestern University Law School on Thursday, September 20, 2012. Stacy was selected for this honor in recognition of her extensive advocacy on behalf of the disabled community and her efforts to assist disabled law students and lawyers, and the disability community.
At Hinshaw, Stacy defends clients in a broad range of business and personal injury matters and litigates cases involving corporation and partnership disputes, construction law, products liability and transportation law.
