The ISBA/JTBF Law and Leadership Institute (LLI) wrapped up its residential program last week at the Southern Illinois University School of Law in Carbondale. The downstate program is a one week residential program that ran from Sunday, June 23 through Saturday, June 29.
The LLI is a statewide initiative to assist students from minority, ethnic, and other groups who are currently underrepresented in the legal professions achieve academic success and aspire to a career in the law.
The two current programs in Illinois were spearheaded by the ISBA Diversity Pipeline committee. The Chicago commuter program will be held from Monday, July 22 through Friday, August 9 and hosted by the John Marshall Law School.

ISBA President-elect Paula H. Holderman receives the Abraham Lincoln Marovitz Philanthropic Award from Chicago student Esperanza Gaytan at the Lawyers Lend-A-Hand’s Youth Spring Awards Dinner on May 15 at the Four Seasons Hotel.
Holderman’s husband, James F. Holderman, chief judge of the U.S. District Court in Chicago, also received the award. Gaytan has been involved in the ISBA-sponsored Law & Leadership Institute.

The ISBA/JTBF Law and Leadership Institute (LLI) will kick off its first residential program this Sunday at the Southern Illinois University School of Law in Carbondale. The downstate program is a one week residential program running from Sunday, June 24 through Saturday, June 30.
The LLI is a statewide initiative to assist students from minority, ethnic, and other groups who are currently underrepresented in the legal professions achieve academic success and aspire to a career in the law.
The two current programs in Illinois were spearheaded by the ISBA Diversity Pipeline committee and will be hosted by the Southern Illinois University School of Law in Carbondale and the John Marshall Law School in Chicago. The LLI involves a combination of classroom lectures, logic and critical thinking exercises, writing and oral advocacy instruction, guest speakers, and field trips to area law firms, government offices and courthouses. Many ISBA members participate as program speakers and activity sponsors. Students who participate in the LLI will:

Maloney."][/caption] The Illinois State Bar Association's Law and Leadership Institute has rolled into its second week -- and the students are loving it. They enjoyed visits to the Daley Center and 1st District Appellate Court on Friday. The students got to witness a trial in Traffic Court at the Daley Center spent nearly three hours discussing a variety of topics with Justice Bertina Lampkin at the Appellate Court. Justice Lampkin even walked the students through her famous dissent in the Rahm Emanuel ballot case. On Tuesday, the students were treated to a negotiations class with Northwestern Law School Professor Sheila Maloney. Click here to view pictures from the court visits. The ISBA Illinois Law and Leadership Institute kicked off on Tuesday at John Marshall Law School. The Institute is a pilot program for 25 students entering the 9th and 10th grades. The students will make a courthouse visit and meet with Cook County judges on Friday at the Daley Center. The Law and Leadership Institute is a state-wide initiative undertaken in collaboration with the legal community and designed to assist minority youth in achieving academic success beyond high school and encouraging them to aspire to a career in the law. This program is being administered by the ISBA’s Standing Committee on Diversity Pipeline with the assistance of Illinois lawyers who share a similar commitment.
