    ATG issues 3 millionth title insurance policy to Oglesby family

    In the midst of celebrating its 50th year, title insurance underwriter Attorneys’ Title Guaranty Fund, Inc. (ATG®) has issued its three millionth policy. The insureds are William and Jill Thompson of Oglesby, Illinois, and the ATG attorney-member who issued the policy is ISBA member Richard Fiocchi of Bernabei, Balestri & Fiocchi, Spring Valley, Illinois.

    Founded in 1964 by a small group of downstate Illinois lawyers, ATG had issued one million policies by 1994 and two million by 2004. “This latest milestone is a tribute to our nearly 4,000 attorney-members and our dedicated staff who provide sellers, purchasers, and lenders with impeccable service each and every day,” said Peter Birnbaum, ATG President and CEO.

    Mr. Fiocchi’s firm has been associated with ATG since 1965 through its founding partner Bruno Bernabei (1921-1995); the remaining name partners have been active with ATG for 30+ years. “ATG is the backbone of our law practice, has been for decades. We're so grateful to be a part of this milestone, to help mark the company’s 50th anniversary—and we’re thrilled for the Thompsons, a nice young couple."

    Results from Tuesday’s judicial elections for all circuits outside of Cook

    Here are the Supreme, Appellate and Circuit results for Tuesday's judicial elections for all circuits outside of Cook. Supreme Court Justice Lloyd Karmeier was retained with a 60.7% yes vote in his retention race, according to results in The Southern Illinoisan.

    Montgomery, Voiland appointed associate judges in 23rd Circuit

    Michael J. Tardy, Director of the Administrative Office of the Illinois Courts, announced today that the Twenty-Third Judicial Circuit judges voted to select Philip G. Montgomery and Joseph R. Voiland as associate judges of the Twenty-Third Judicial Circuit.

    Mr. Montgomery received his undergraduate degree in 1984 from Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, and his Juris Doctor in 1987 from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. Mr. Montgomery is currently affiliated with the DeKalb County State's Attorney's Office in Sycamore.

    Mr. Voiland received his undergraduate degree in 1974 from Washington State University in Pullman, Washington and his Juris Doctor in 1977 from Loyola University in Chicago. Mr. Voiland is currently engaged in solo practice in Yorkville and as a bankruptcy trustee with the U.S. Department of Justice in Chicago.

    CLE: Construction Contracts: The Boiler Plate That Gives You Fits

    Join us in DeKalb on Friday, Oct. 24 for a look at the common construction contact terms that require close attention to detail, as well as the often-recurring construction issues that can have significant consequences. Construction law practitioners, real estate lawyers, and attorneys providing legal advice to project owners, architects, engineers, subcontractors, and contractors – with basic to intermediate practice experience – who attend this seminar will better understand: the various issues that can arise during the performance of a construction contract, including warranty, insurance, and changed conditions; the implications of terminating a contractor or subcontractor; the common damage provisions of construction projects; the importance of paying attention to the details when making compensation claims; change order provisions and the issues that can arise; the contract provisions found in public construction contracts; and how to make your disputed contracts easier to understand and enforce.

    The seminar is presented by the ISBA Construction Law Section and co-sponsored by the ISBA Commercial Banking, Collections and Bankruptcy Section and the ISBA Real Estate Law Section. It qualifies for 6.0 hours MCLE credit, including 1.0 hour Professional Responsibility MCLE credit (subject to approval).

    Kauzlarich appointed associate judge in 14th Circuit

    Michael J. Tardy, Director of the Administrative Office of the Illinois Courts, announced today that the Fourteenth Judicial Circuit judges voted to select Norma Kauzlarich as an associate judge of the Fourteenth Judicial Circuit.

    Ms. Kauzlarich received her undergraduate degree in 1986 from Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, and her Juris Doctor in 1994 from the University of Iowa. Ms. Kauzlarich is currently affiliated with the Rock Island County State's Attorney's Office in Rock Island.

    Applications being accepted for 10th Circuit judicial vacancy

    Illinois Supreme Court Justice Thomas L. Kilbride has announced an application process for appointment to an upcoming resident Circuit Court vacancy in Peoria County in the 10th Judicial Circuit. The vacancy will be created upon Judge Michael E. Brandt's retirement, effective December 12, 2014.

    Karen S. Williams 1972-2014

    Karen S. Williams, 42, Rockford, died Wednesday, August 27, 2014, in OSF St. Anthony Medical Center as the result of injuries received in an automobile accident.

    Born March 2, 1972, in Taiwan Taichung, daughter of Bennie L. and Ching-Pi Wu Williams. Karen graduated from Jefferson High School in 1990, received her bachelor's degree from the University of Illinois, her master's degree from Villanova and her juris doctor degree from the University of Baltimore.

    Karen was a practicing attorney in the Chicago area for nine years before moving back home to Rockford. While in Chicago, she worked as a contract attorney in the litigation department at Shefsky & Froelich, Ltd. She was currently a certified arbitrator at the 17th Judicial Circuit Court of the State of Illinois. Karen was an activist and a high energy cheerleader in every aspect of her life. She served as president and member of the Metropolitan Board of the Chicago Urban League, an organization that identifies young professionals and develops them into future community leaders.

    Schorsch appointed associate judge in 15th Circuit

    Michael J. Tardy, Director of the Administrative Office of the Illinois Courts, announced today that the Fifteenth Judicial Circuit judges voted to select Glenn R. Schorsch as an associate judge of the Fifteenth Judicial Circuit.

    Mr. Schorsch received his undergraduate degree in 1981 from Bradley University in Peoria, IL, and his Juris Doctor in 1988 from John Marshall Law School in Chicago, IL. Mr. Schorsch is currently affiliated with the Stephenson County Public Defender's Office in Freeport, IL.

    The law firm of Bozeman, Neighbour, Patton & Noe, LLP is pleased to announce that Daniel F. Hardin has joined the firm as an Associate.

    Daniel graduated magna cum laude from the University of Illinois College of Law in 2012. While in law school, Daniel was the Managing Editor for the Journal of Law, Technology and Policy. Daniel received the Rickert Award for Excellence in Legal Writing, one of the College's highest honors. Daniel is originally from Portland, Oregon and graduated magna cum laude from Portland State University in 2007.

    Prior to joing the firm, Danield worked as a judicial law clerk for Justice Mary W. McDade of the Illinois Appellate Court. He also served as a volunteer attorney at a legal aid clinic in Rock Island. Daniel is licensed in Illinois and will sit for the Iowa Bar examination in July of 2014. Daniel is engaged in general practice with a focus on litigation.

    Nerino Petro joins Holmstrom & Kennedy as Chief Information Officer

    The law firm of Holmstrom & Kennedy, P.C. is pleased to announce that Attorney Nerino J. Petro, Jr. has joined the firm as its new Chief Information Officer.

    A native of Rockford, Illinois, Petro graduated from Northern Illinois University College of Law, in May 1988.  He received a B.A. degree in Political Science, from NIU in May 1985. Admitted to the Illinois Bar in 1988 and the Wisconsin Bar in 2007, Petro is a member of the American, Illinois and Wisconsin State, and Winnebago County Bar Associations. He practiced as a solo attorney in Winnebago County for more than 16 years.

    Recognized nationally as a speaker and author on legal technology and practice management, Petro speaks throughout the US and abroad on these topics. He is an active member and past Chair of the Illinois State Bar Association Committee on Legal Technology. He has accepted the position of Chair of the Winnebago County Bar Association Practice Management Committee for the upcoming year. He served as the first Practice Management Advisor for the State Bar of Wisconsin, and its more than 24,000 members, from 2006-2014.
