    ISBA 2nd Vice President Paula H. Holderman named as one of 100 Women Making a Difference

    Illinois State Bar Association 2nd Vice President Paula Hudson Holderman has been named as one of the "100 Women Making a Difference” by Today's Chicago Woman. She will be featured in the July 2012 issue.

    Holderman, who will become ISBA President-elect at the Annual Meeting in June, is the chief attorney development officer for Winston & Strawn LLP. In 2011, she took the lead to establish the ISBA's Law and Leadership Institute to expose diverse young women and men to the profession of law.

    Holderman, Winston & Strawn’s chief attorney development officer, has global responsibility for the firm’s professional development and all facets of education and training. She also teaches as the James C. Wood Distinguished Co-Lecturer in Intellectual Property Law at the University of Illinois College of Law.

    ISBA 2nd Vice President Paula H. Holderman named one of 15 Women Making an Impact

    ISBA 2nd Vice President Paula H. Holderman was one of six ISBA members honored by Chicago Lawyer Magazine as Women Making an Impact in 2012.

    Holderman, who will become ISBA President-elect at the Annual Meeting in June, is the chief attorney development officer for Winston & Strawn LLP. She took the lead to establish the ISBA's Law and Leadership Institute to expose diverse young women and men to the profession of law.

    Other ISBA members honored included Women's Bar Association of Illinois President Deane Brown of Beerman Pritkin Mirabeli Swerdlove LLP, Jean Golden of Cassidy Schade, Jill B. Berkeley of Neal Gerber & Eisenberg, Meighan A. Harmon of Schiller DuCanto & Fleck LLP and Amy Manning of McGuireWoods LLP.

    Paula Holderman receives the 2011 “Women with Vision” Award

    ISBA 2nd Vice President and Winston & Strawn chief attorney development officer Paula H. Holderman will be honored by the Women's Bar Association of Illinois (WBAI) with the 2011 "Women with Vision" award. Ms. Holderman will be presented with the award at the WBAI's Joint Professional Dinner on Nov. 3, 2011 in Chicago.

    The "Women with Vision" Awards were first presented in 1997 by the WBAI to honor and recognize women who have demonstrated visionary approaches in their professional endeavors and who have made a contribution to the well-being and empowerment of women.

    Ms. Holderman will take office as ISBA president of the in 2013. Ms. Holderman is also a member of Winston & Strawn's diversity committee as well as a chair of the Women to Women (W2W) initiative.

    Illinois Supreme Court announces mentoring program for new attorneys in Cook County

    Illinois Supreme Court Justice Mary Jane Theis announced Tuesday that the Supreme Court Commission on Professionalism is teaming up with Winston and Strawn, the Chicago Bar Association, the Cook County Bar Association, The John Marshall Law School, the Cook County State's Attorney's Office and other legal organizations to begin a mentoring program for newly admitted lawyers in Cook County.

    The announcement Tuesday continues a statewide initiative by Chief Justice Thomas L. Kilbride, the Supreme Court and the Commission on Professionalism that was launched in June 2011 to urge attorney groups, law schools and individual lawyers to take an active hand in ensuring that new attorneys get prac-tical professional guidance after law school.

    The early years of legal practice are among the most challenging for most attorneys. Recent law school graduates generally receive limited practical and clinical experience while in law school, and the months leading up to their admission to the bar are spent in extensive preparation for the two-day bar exam, which consists of essay and multiple choice questions with no gauge of clinical or practical experience.

    In such an environment, experienced attorney mentors can prove invaluable in helping recent bar admit-tees learn the actual practice of law, and get them a meaningful start in their legal careers as well as pro-mote principles that guide them toward professionalism.

    The ABA welcomed new members at an orientation lunch at the Midyear Meeting in Atlanta last week. They included ISBA 3rd Vice President Paula H. Holderman (left), who is scheduled to assume the presidency of the ISBA in 2013. Chair of the Illinois State Delegation, Robert Clifford (right) of Clifford Law Offices, also attended the luncheon. A skit was put on to explain how new members can speak on resolutions that come before the House of Delegates.

    Solovy thanks ISBA Board for supporting historic preservation commission
    [caption id="attachment_4902" align="alignright" width="292" caption="ISBA Board member and candidate for Third Vice President Paula Holderman, ISBA President John O'Brien and Illinois Supreme Court Historic Preservation Commission Chairman Jerold Solovy at the Board of Governors meeting on Oct. 16."][/caption] Jerold Solovy, a 54-year member of the ISBA and the Chairman of the Illinois Supreme Court Historic Preservation Commission, appeared before the ISBA Board of Governors last week to thank the Board for its support of the historic preservation committee. Solovy is also the Chairman Emeritus of Chicago firm Jenner & Block. The Illinois Supreme Court Historic Preservation Commission was created by the Supreme Court Historic Preservation Act in 2007. Under the Act: "The Commission shall assist and advise the Court in regard to the acquisition, collection, documentation, preservation, cataloging, and related matters with respect to historic aspects of buildings, objects, artifacts, documents, and information, regardless of form, relating to the Illinois judiciary.

Holderman"][/caption] The Illinois State Bar Association election cycle begins today and Board of Governors member Paula H. Holderman of Chicago has announced her candidacy for third vice president. The complete notice of elections is on pages 6 and 7 of the Illinois Lawyer Now Quarterly that was recently mailed to members. Seven contests are scheduled for seats on the Board of Governors: Cook – 3 to be elected Incumbents: Russell W. Hartigan – Chicago Paula H. Holderman – Chicago* Mark E. Wojcik – Chicago Area 2 (Circuits 17 & 19) – 1 to be elected Incumbent: Bernard Wysocki – Waukegan Area 5 (Circuits 5, 6, & 11) – 1 to be elected Incumbent: Stephen R. Pacey – Paxton Under Age 37 – Downstate – 1 to be elected Incumbent: Dion U. Davi – Wheaton** Under Age 37 – Cook – 1 to be elected Incumbent: Gina Arquilla DeBoni – Chicago * Eligible to run, but would only be entitled to serve two years. Under the bylaws the third vice-president automatically succeeds to the office of second vice-president; therefore, there is no incumbent for this office. ** Ineligible to succeed due to age limitations. The entire Downstate Assembly and 39 Assembly seats from Cook County are up for election. Nominating petitions may be filed no earlier than January 15, 2010 and must be filed by 4:30 p.m.
