    Dana B. Mehlman elected to U. of I. Civil and Environmental Engineering Alumni Association Board of Directors

    Dana Mehlman, a Chicago-based attorney in the Environmental Law Practice of Hinshaw & Culbertson LLP, has been elected to the Board of Directors of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) Alumni Association. Her four-year term began at the Board meeting held on UIUC campus in Urbana, Illinois, on Friday, September 14.

    Ms. Mehlman has been a member of the CEE Alumni Association since 1999. From 2003 through 2007, while living in Atlanta, she served as President of the Atlanta Illini, the University’s local alumni affiliate, where she was the primary point of contact between more than 3,000 alumni of the University of Illinois residing in the Atlanta metropolitan area and the University. 

    The mission of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Civil and Environmental Engineering Alumni Association is to support the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering faculty, staff, students, and alumni and to inspire lifelong loyalty and pride among alumni and friends by developing and enhancing their continued relationship with the Department. To fulfill its mission, the Association has a Board of Directors to provide advice and counsel to the Department, to recognize distinguished alumni, to foster collegial alumni relations and alumni support of the Department, to mentor students and facilitate their entry into the civil and environmental engineering profession, to represent the Department’s activities conducted by the Alumni Association, and to support the Department’s public outreach activities.

    Howard L. Huntington joins MSC Litigation Team

    Mahoney, Silverman & Cross, LLC is pleased to announce the addition of Howard L. Huntington to its litigation team. Howard has over 13 years of experience focusing his practice on business torts, commercial litigation, construction, product liability, public entity, civil rights and transportation litigation.     Nicholas Johnson rejoins Querrey & Harrow's Waukegan office

    Querrey & Harrow is pleased to announce the return of Nicholas Johnson, who will practice in its Waukegan office.  Mr. Johnson focuses his practice on litigation, construction law, and contract issues.

    Mr. Johnson received his BA degree from the University of Wisconsin in 2000, and his JD degree, magna cum laude, from Thomas M. Cooley Law School in 2005.  He is admitted to practice in both Illinois and Wisconsin, and is a member of the federal trial bar. 

    Mr. Johnson is a member of the Illinois Bar Association, the Wisconsin Bar Association, the Lake County Bar Association, the McHenry County Bar Association, the Defense Research Institute, and the Illinois Association of Defense Trial Counsel.  Mr. Johnson also sits on the Zoning and Building Commission for the Village of Antioch, where he resides with his family

    Etha Fox 1914-2012

    Etha "Bea" Fox, 98, died of complications from pneumonia on Sept. 8 at Mercy Hospital and Medical Center in Chicago.

    Fox was a retired Captain of the U.S. Coast Guard, and beloved daughter of the late Dr. Nathan l. Fox and Mary (nee Diamond). She practiced before the US Court of Appeals, Law and Business Administration Division. Bea was a life trustee of Chicago Sinai Congregation, founder and secretary of Emeritus Woman's Bar Association, Chicago Chapter. Member of Illinois State Bar Association and American Bar Association. Member of National Council for Jewish Women.

    Justice Michael James Murphy 1941-2012

    First District Appellate Justice Michael James Murphy, 71, passed away on Monday, Oct. 1 of an unspecified caused.

    Murphy became a Cook County associate judge in 1985. He was elected a circuit judge in 1992 and elected to the 1st District Appellate Court in 2006. 

    He was the beloved husband of Mary Ellen, nee Lowrey; loving father of Courtney (Derek) Eovaldi, Nora Lowrey Murphy, and the late Tracy (Trey) Ish. Son of the late Arthur Joseph and Eileen, nee Kelly. Brother of Arthur (Audrey), Mary (Charles) Erickson, Hon. Patrick (Susan), Eileen (Hon. David) Donnersberger, John, Thomas (Margaret) and the late Rev. Joseph Murphy. Fond uncle of Arthur III, Ann, Joann, Kim, Jeannie, Maureen, Matthew, Joe, Mary Eileen, Mark, Justin, Jacob, Molly, Madeline, Clare, Tom, Katie, and Kevin. Cherished grandfather of Albie, Michael, and Katie Ish; Joey, Luke, and Ella Eovaldi. Great-Uncle to many. He was truly loved and will be dearly missed.

    Don Edwin Johnson 1939-2012

    Attorney Don Edwin Johnson, 73, formally of Pinckneyville, Illinois, died on September 27, 2012, in St. Louis, Missouri, where he had resided since retiring in 2006.  

     He was born on January 29, 1939, in Decatur, Illinois, the son of Benjamin Edwin Johnson and Mary Louis Pitzer Johnson.   He spent his childhood on the family farm in Assumption, Illinois.

    He enrolled at Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois at age 16 and graduated cum laude in 1959 with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science. He also spent a semester at American University in Washington DC. In 1961 he received a Juris Doctorate from the University of Illinois specializing in Taxation and Mineral Law.

    He married Suzanne Curtis in Mt. Vernon, Illinois on August 23, 1959.

    He was appointed law clerk for Justice Byron O. House of the Illinois Supreme Court and joined the law firm of House and House in Nashville, Illinois.  He then started the law offices of Hohlt, House, DeMoss, and Johnson in Pinckneyville and DuQuoin, Illinois, and later became the senior partner of Johnson, Seibert, and Bigham in Pinckneyville.

    He was a member of the Illinois State Bar Association and Chairman of the Federal Taxation and Mineral Law Section Councils.    He was also a member of the Illinois Bar Foundation, American Bar Association and Foundation, Eastern Mineral Law Foundation, and the Perry County Bar Association.

    He held three public offices:  States Attorney of Perry County, City Attorney of DuQuoin, Illinois, and City Attorney of Pinckneyville, Illinois for twenty years.

    Amari meets with Scalia at dedication of Goldberg Courtroom

    ISBA Past President Leonard Amari met with Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia at the dedication of John Marshall Law School's Goldberg Courtroom. Scalia praised the late Justice Arthur Goldberg as one of the most prominent labor attorney's in the nation's history.

    Amari, the managing partner of Amari & Locallo, serves as the President of John Marshall's Board of Trustees.

    James T. McGovern joins Daley Mohan Groble, P.C.

    James is a 2002 graduate of DePaul University College of Law and started his career as an Assistant Corporation Counsel with the City of Chicago. After gaining experience in the Tort Division of that office, James was promoted Special Litigation Counsel for the City of Chicago, defending police officers in high exposure Civil Rights cases. Most recently, he continued defending those cases at a private firm. During his career, James has tried over 20 jury cases to verdict and handled a wide variety of Tort, Commercial and Civil Rights Litigation.     John L. Stewart 1915-2012

    John L. Stewart, 96, died on Sept. 12 in Carbondale.

    John was born Dec. 4, 1915, in Murphysboro, a son to the late Leroy and Josephine Antoinette Eck Stewart.

    He was united in marriage to Lucy P. Phillips on Sept. 3, 1942, in Jackson, Mo.; Lucy preceded him in death Dec. 1, 1996.

    John was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Murphysboro and was a U.S. Army veteran, serving as a sergeant in military intelligence during World War II.

    John was an attorney and operated his own private practice in Murphysboro for many years. He was a graduate of University of Illinois School of Law in 1939. After his service in the Army, he returned to Murphysboro and joined his father, Leroy, in his law practice and formed Stewart and Stewart in Murphysboro. John was a member of Murphysboro Elks Lodge BPOE 572. He was a member of the Illinois State Bar Association and University of Illinois Alumni Association.

    Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, John W. and Barbara Stewart of Orland Park; one granddaughter, Joy Stewart and her fiancé, Eric Anderson; one grandson, David Stewart; and one great-grandson, Collin Anderson.

    Joseph Z. Sudow 1914-2012

    Joseph Z. Sudow, a community leader and noted attorney with more than seven decades of legal experience, formerly of Peoria, died Sept. 9. He was 98.

    Born April 15, 1914, in Sioux City, Iowa, to Sam and Sarah Sudow, Joe was raised in Aberdeen, S.D. Joe graduated from the University of Michigan in 1935 before going on to earn his Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School in 1938.

    After practicing law in Chicago, Joe became the Peoria District rationing attorney in 1943, where he worked to help provide government rations of gasoline and fuel oil during World War II. In 1945 he opened his own law practice in Peoria, and in 1950, served as supervisor of the U.S. Census for the 10th Congressional District in Illinois. Joe joined the law firm of Kavanagh, Scully, Sudow, White and Frederick LLP as a partner in 1958 and retired as Of Counsel in 2011 after his 97th birthday, when he and his wife Shirley moved to Washington, D.C.
