The legal community from central and southern Illinois gathered to honor Lois Wood in Collinsville on Saturday, Nov. 4. Wood retired after 13 years as executive director at the Land of Lincoln Legal Assistance Foundation (LOLLAF) and a total of 43 years of service with the organization in pursuit of equal justice for low-income and senior residents of central and southern Illinois. Ebony Huddleston, Land of Lincoln Board of Directors; Land of Lincoln President and ISBA Past President John Thies; and ISBA Third Vice President Dennis Orsey were in attendance to thank and congratulate Wood.

The Third Judicial Circuit Pro Bono Committee hosted a pro bono luncheon on Tuesday, Oct. 24, at Lewis and Clark Community College in Edwardsville. This annual event commemorates National Pro Bono Week and recognizes the efforts of Pro Bono Pledge signatories and Pro Bono Service Award recipients.
Granite City attorney Terry O'Leary received the Pro Bono Service Award for his outstanding pro bono service to to low-income individuals and charitable organizations. Circuit Judge Barb Crowder was awarded the Leadership Award as chair on the Third Judicial Circuit Pro Bono Committee.
Dennis Orsey, ISBA third vice president, attended the event to congratulate the award recipients.

Dennis Rose, born in East St. Louis, Illinois April 24, 1947, passed away September 17, 2017 at the age of 70 in St. Louis, Missouri. Mr. Rose's parents, William Edward Rose and Bertha Beatrice Rose (nee Oliver), preceded him in death. He is survived by the god children he adored, Annamarie Bindenagel Sehovic and Carl Bindenagel, their parents James D. and Jeanne Bindenagel, and by his many friends around the world too numerous to list. Mr. Rose attended the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in the teaching of social studies in 1969 and with a juris doctorate degree in 1972. Mr. Rose was admitted to the Illinois Bar in 1972 and the Missouri Bar in 1978. In addition, he was admitted to practice before the U.S. District Courts for the Southern and Eastern Districts of Illinois, the Eastern District of Missouri, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, and the Illinois Supreme Court. He began the practice of law in 1973 retiring in 2007 as a Partner in the Belleville, Illinois firm bearing his name - Donovan Rose Nester & Joley PC. Mr. Rose was a member and Chairman of the Missouri Ethics Commission having been appointed by then Missouri State Governor Jay Nixon. Retired Judge of the 1st Judicial Circuit Court David W. Watt, Jr., 74, of Murphysboro, passed away at 2:04 a.m. Monday, October 2, 2017, at his residence in Murphysboro in the company of his wife and sons.
David was born on April 19, 1943, in Springfield, Illinois, to David W. Watt, Sr. and Marietta (Cullen) Watt.
David was a 1961 graduate from the Springfield High School in Springfield, Illinois. He did his undergraduate studies at the University of Wisconsin, graduating in 1965. He was a member of the Theta Delta Chi Fraternity and served as the business manager of the University of Wisconsin Daily Cardinal. He received his law degree from the University Of Illinois College Of Law in 1968 and was admitted to the Illinois Bar that same year. He was admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court in 1977. From 1968 to 1970, he served with the Jackson County State’s Attorney’s Office and from 1970 to 1980 with Hendricks and Watt; and from 1980 to 1982, a partner with Hendricks, Watt and Grace. -

Joseph R. “Joe” Brown, Jr. 68 of Troy, Illinois passed away on Wednesday, September 20, 2017 surrounded by his family and friends after a long battle with cancer.
Joe was born on June 6, 1949 in Kansas City, Missouri; a son to the late Joseph Ross and Elizabeth (Etter) Brown Sr. Joe graduated from Pekin Community High School in 1967. He attended Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana, graduating in 1971 with a bachelor of arts degree in English literature. In 1974 he graduated from law school at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana and became licensed to practice the same year.
Following graduation, Joe became an assistant state's attorney in Edwardsville, Illinois, where he handled many prosecuting assignments, including felony trials. In 1978, he left to work for Paul E. Riley and J. William Lucco, following the death of the legendary Dick Mudge. Becoming a partner in 1980, he practiced law in Edwardsville for 39 years with his great friend and partner, Bill Lucco, until shortly before his death. Joe served as a Madison County prosecutor and assistant state's attorney from 1974 to 1978.
He was a member of the Illinois State Bar Association, the Madison County Bar Association, and the Missouri Bar Association.

Honorable Robert P. LeChien, 65, of Belleville, born August 29, 1952, in Belleville, Ill., passed away on Thursday, August 31, 2017.
A lifelong resident of St. Clair County, Bob graduated from Althoff Catholic High School in 1970, and three years later obtained his B.S. in administration of justice administration from SIU-C. He proudly entered Southern Illinois University School of Law and graduated with its first class of distinguished alumni in 1976. He then embarked on an esteemed legal career. From 1976 to 1980, he served as an assistant state's attorney in St. Clair County and then joined his brother in private practice at LeChien & Associates. In 1985, he founded the Consumer Law Center where he undertook precedent setting cases which continue to provide protection for homeowners today.
In 1987, Bob began 30 years of dedicated service to the bench when he was appointed as associate circuit judge of the 20th Judicial Circuit. Judge LeChien was elected as resident circuit judge of St. Clair County in 1998, and most recently was re-elected to that position in 2016. He will be remembered not only for his respect for and dedication to the law, but for the empathy he showed to those who appeared in his courtroom. -

Bart Mann, 60, died Thursday evening Aug. 24, 2017, at Herrin Hospital in Herrin. He was born April 2, 1957, in Du Quoin, to Kenneth B. and Mary Ruth (Sharp) Mann.
Bart was a well-known practicing attorney since July 1986 and a member of the Illinois State Bar Association.
He was a past master of Herrin’s Prairie Masonic Lodge 693; he revived and organized the Herrin Mayors Thanksgiving Day Dinner in 2001 and continued to serve the people of Herrin at the Thanksgiving Day dinner; He was also a member of Mensa Society; served on the Board of Directors for Habitat for Humanity and also worked with Habitat for Humanity in both Herrin and Marion.
He was actively involved with the Dream Factory, a volunteer-driven not-for-profit organization that grants the dreams of children with critical or chronic illnesses.Surviving are a brother, Michael Mann of Blairsville; sister, Nancy McDonald of Herrin; nephew, Ryan B. McDonald of Herrin and a host of friends and clients thoughout the Southern Illinois region.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

Detective Carl Walker of the O’Fallon Police Department was awarded the ISBA Law Enforcement Award on August 21 during an O’Fallon City Council meeting at City Hall. Third Vice President Dennis Orsey presented the award.
The ISBA Law Enforcement Award was created to recognize sworn law enforcement officers for conduct that promotes justice and to distinguish those individuals whose service to the public brings honor and respect to the entire criminal justice system. It recognizes those who excel in law enforcement.
Detective Walker, who was nominated for the award by Captain Kirk Brueggeman of the O’Fallon Police Department, will be acknowledged for his efforts to automate the information sharing process for the St. Clair County Investigative Professional Group using information technology.
