The IBF/YLD Children's Assistance Fund recently presented a $5,000 grant to CASA Lake County. Pictured on the left is Terri Z. Greenberg, Executive Director of CASA and Krysia Ressler, Waukegan, member of the YLD Council.
The grant was given to support the Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) volunteers who represent children who are under court jurisdiction because they have suffered physical abuse, family violence, psycholgical torment, sexual abuse, neglect or abandonment while in the care of their parents. CASA volunteers work to help these children find safe, permanent homes.

The Illinois State Bar Association Young Lawyers will hold a Bean Bag Party and Tournament on March 6 to benefit the Illinois Bar Foundation/YLD Children's Assistance Program. The YLD Children's Assistance Fund is a special fund of the Illinois Bar Foundation, a 501(c)(3) charitable entity.
- When: Saturday, March 6, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
- Where: Mahoney's Pub and Grille, 551 N. Ogden Ave. (on Ogden near Grand), Chicago (map and directions)
- What: Appetizer bar and domestic draft beer, mixed well drinks and soft drinks
- Cost: $35.00 per person per wristband or $100.00 for entrance fee for Bean Bag Tournament for a team of two with two wristbands. You must be at least 21 years old to participate.
- Deadline: Bean Bag Team registration and pre-registration for a wristband is open until Tuesday, March 2. Thereafter wristbands can be purchased at the door the day of the event

The ABA Young Lawyers Division will honor Justin Heather, co-editor of the Illinois State Bar Association's YLD newsletter, with its National Outstanding Young Lawyer Award. The YLD will present the award during the ABA Midyear Meeting in Orlando, Fla., on Saturday, Feb. 6. The YLD presents this award annually to a young lawyer who exemplifies professional excellence, service to the legal profession and the bar, service to the community, and who has a reputation for the advancement of legal ethics and professional responsibility. Heather, a litigation associate with the law firm of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP, concentrates his practice on complex corporate litigation. He represents clients in a variety of disputes, including international gas and oil matters, intellectual property, securities law, bankruptcy, franchise law, complex commercial contracts, and mergers and acquisitions. In his eight years of practice, Heather has logged more than 4,000 pro bono hours, more than 10 times the ABA's recommended 50 hours a year. His pro bono service involves working with such clients as death row inmates, West African citizens suffering political persecution, and other clients in various race and disability discrimination lawsuits. In addition to his frequent pro bono contributions, Heather actively supports a variety of bar activities.

The Illinois State Bar Association's Young Lawyers Division will host its 12th Annual Holiday Party to benefit the Illinois Bar Foundation/Young Lawyer's Division Children's Assistance Program on Dec. 4 from 6-10 p.m. at the Cubby Bear, 1059 W. Addison. Over $150,000 has been raised to establish children's waiting rooms throughout Illinois and to provide assistance to other child related legal programs. The YLD Children's Assistance Fund is a special fund of the Illinois Bar Foundation, a 501(c)(3) charitable entity.

The event raised nearly $10,000 for the IBF/YLD Children's Assistance Fund. Life Span is committed to the cessation of domestic violence and to the relief of those who suffer from its consequences.

The Illinois State Bar Assocation's Young Lawyers Division will host a "Day at the Races" on Sept. 26 to benefit the Children's Assistance Program. This event will take place from noon-6 p.m. at Arlington Park Racecourse, Marquee Tent 3 in the Miller Lite Party Deck in Arlingon Heights. Tickets will be available at 11:30 a.m. at the Grandstand Entrance at the Will Call window. The cost is $60 per person and includes admission, daily racing guide, private party deck, soft drinks, beer, wine and appetizers from 12:30-6 p.m. The deadline is Sept. 15 and space is limited.
