Numerous cases and tests determine whether a state can exercise jurisdiction over a defendant. The buzzwords include general personal jurisdiction, specific personal jurisdiction, minimum contacts, stream of commerce, and “arises from.” In a spring 2021 decision, the U.S. Supreme Court provided clarity to the “arises from” jurisprudence in a majority opinion authored by Justice Kagan. In his April Illinois Bar Journal article, “It’s Tough To Be Ford,” Grant A. Bosnich examines the Court’s ruling in this 2021 case (Ford Motor Company).

The ISBA president-elect will appoint a member to one of the under-represented seats of the Board of Governors at the May 20 meeting of the Board of Governors. The member appointed to this position will serve with full Board member privileges for a three-year term beginning the first day of the 2022 Annual Meeting in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin.

The Honorable Judge James (Jim) M. Wexstten, 71, passed away at Greentree Assisted Living and Memory Care in Mount Vernon, Illinois, on April 10, 2022. Jim was born on April 29, 1950, in Pana, Illinois, to the late Henry and Doris (Ruppert) Wexstten. Jim grew up in Nokomis, Illinois. Jim married Darla Smith Wisely on August 3, 1982, in Breckenridge, Colorado.
