Eugene Mitchell Snarski 1927-2014

Eugene "Gene" SnarskiEugene Mitchell "Gene" Snarski, a resident of Waukegan, Illinois, since 1958, passed away on September 2, 2014, after a long illness . Gene was born on April 15, 1927, to Charlotte R. Snarski and Narcyz (Nicholas) Snarski of North Chicago, Illinois. His maternal grandparents were Adam Ratajczak and Maryanna Ratajczak of 918 14th St., North Chicago, Illinois. His paternal grandparents were Anthony Snarski and Marcianna Malkiewich of Trusy, Poland.

Gene attended Holy Rosary Catholic Grade School in North Chicago starting in 1931, and graduated in May of 1940. Thereafter, he attended Waukegan Township High School (WTHS). He played in the Junior band for a half year and then entered into the ROTC program at WTHS as a private and progressed through the ranks, attaining the rank of Captain during the early stages of World War II. He graduated from WTHS in May of 1944.

In June of 1944, he began studies at the University of Notre Dame. His studies there were interrupted when he was drafted at the age of 18 into the United States Army at Fort Sheridan, Illinois. After completing basic training, he was transferred to Camp Hood, Texas, where he became an Infantry Rifleman First Class. He served at the Field Artillery Camp at Fort Sill, Oklahoma from June 21, 1945, to October 31, 1946, when he was honorably discharged as a private First Class Infantryman from the Headquarters Battery of the Fifth Field Artillery Group Army of the United States.

After the completion of his military, service, Gene was readmitted to the University of Notre Dame and graduated with Honors on January 30, 1949. He graduated from Northwestern Law School on January 30, 1952. He was admitted to the Illinois Bar on November 17, 1952, and obtained a position with the law firm of Hall, Meyer and Van Deusen. In 1955, he began working for James Herman and Co. as a claims adjuster and engaged in the practice of law with Charles May. He served as a felony probation officer for Lake County from 1955 to 1962. In 1956, he joined the firm of Lidschin and Pucin. He later became a partner at the law firm of Conzelman, Schultz, O'Meara, and Snarski. Gene served as the City Attorney for the cities of Park City, Round Lake, and Kildeer, and the Assistant City Attorney for the city of Waukegan, where he also served as the City Secretary. Additionally, Gene served as the Treasurer of the Lake County Bar Association for five years. He practiced law until his retirement on January 31, 2006.

On February 13, 1954, at St. Anastasia Catholic Church in Waukegan, Illinois, he was married by Monsignor Joseph Garrity, to Sally Reynolds Sexton of Marshfield, Wisconsin, the daughter of Dr. Walter G. Sexton and Ethel Morgan Sexton, Gene and Sally were married for 60 years. He was predeceased by Sally, who died on July 24, 2014.

Gene is survived by all 8 of his and Sally's children, daughter, Elisabeth, (F. Steven) Bissell; three children, Katherine (Eric) Richardson, Maria, and Eleanor; her son, William; daughter, Sarah (Robert) Berrett; two children, Kaitlyn and Emily; triplet sons, Thomas (Marijean); two children, Theresa and Rebecca; Andrew (Cindy); two children, Nicole and Alexander; and Timothy (Shawn); four children, Felicia, Marianna, Andrea and Amelia: son, Nicholas (Jill); four children, Stephen, Madeline, Sally, and Nicholas; daughter, Maria (A. Peter Giorgianni); three children, Peter, Annalise, and Alex.

Gene is survived by his sister, Generose Szostak, of Lincolnshire, Illinois, and many nieces and nephews, A joint funeral mass for Gene and Sally will be celebrated at St. Anastasia Church, 624 Douglas Ave., Waukegan, Illinois, on September 27, 2014, at 10:30 a.m. Visitation will be held at the church before the mass at 9:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Anastasia School, 629 Glen Flora Ave., Waukegan, IL 60085.
