The Illinois Supreme Court has appointed Lionel Jean-Baptiste as a Circuit Judge of Cook County, Ninth Subcircuit. This appointment fills the vacancy created by the death of the Hon. Gerald C. Bender. It takes effect March 4, 2011, and terminates on December 3, 2012.

Yoo is a member of Cozen O’Connor’s general litigation department in the firm’s Chicago office. She focuses her practice on commercial litigation matters, including premises liability, construction negligence, product liability, warranty and coverage. She has extensive experience drafting pleadings and responses to discovery, as well as preparing and arguing motions for summary judgment, motions to dismiss, and motions in limine.

The Illinois Supreme Court announced today that John F. McAdams received most of the votes cast by the circuit judges in the Sixteenth Judicial Circuit and is declared to be appointed to the office of associate judge. Mr. McAdams received his undergraduate degree in 1991 from Eastern Illinois University in Charleston and his Juris Doctor in 1995 from Northern Illinois University in DeKalb. Mr. McAdams is currently engaged in practice with McAdams & McAdams in Yorkville. The 16th Judicial Circuit is made up of Kane, Kendall and DeKalb counties.

ISBA Laureate James J. Ahern, Sr., 80, has passed away. From Ahern's 2001 induction into the Academy of Illinois Lawyers: To anyone who practices traffic law in Illinois, it is well known that the "dean" of the traffic bar is James J. Ahern, senior. His law firm – Ahern, Maloney, and Moran with primary offices in Skokie –concentrates in the defense of DUI and representation in other traffic matters. His reputation in the law has several dimensions. He is, first and foremost, an outstanding lawyer. He has appeared frequently in the Appellate and Supreme courts. He represents his clients' interests fully, professionally, and with compassion. He also is known far and wide as an unselfish teacher. For over twenty years, he has been a member of the Executive Committee of the Illinois Traffic Court Conference. His development of scenarios faced by traffic law attorneys and the panel discussion of these fact situations is a highlight of the annual conference. That part of the seminar is now referred to as "The Ahern Panel." Services have been held. In lieu of flowers, contributions to Rainbow Hospice would be appreciated.

Hassakis continued his push to improve the state’s juvenile justice programs by meeting with leaders of the Illinois Department of Juvenile Justice on Friday, Feb. 4, at the Thompson Center in Chicago. The meeting covered a wide-range of issues the Department faces and focused on ways ISBA can help IDJJ move forward by “laying a brick everyday,” the guiding philosophy of new IDJJ Director Arthur Bishop. Three areas were identified where IDJJ is making improvements. The first is its continued withdrawal from the Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC), where it resided until four years ago. However, IDJJ still operates under IDOC’s administrative policies. The second is passing legislation beneficial to its core mission. This can be seen in the push to update legislation on juvenile expungements.
