The Chicago Alumni Chapter of Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity, International, will celebrate the 100th anniversary of its founding at a Centennial Banquet on Saturday, January 15, 2011, at the Hotel InterContinental on the Magnificent Mile, 505 North Michigan Ave. The celebration will begin with a reception at 6:00 p.m., followed by dinner and program commencing at 7:00 p.m. As part of festivities, the chapter and the fraternity's International Executive Board will be honoring Hon. James F. Holderman, Chief Judge of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, with the Hon. Mary Ann G. McMorrow Distinguished Service to the Legal Profession Award. As this event is being held during the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., national holiday weekend, the group will also recognize Hon. Timothy C. Evans, Chief Judge of the Circuit Court of Cook County, for his outstanding work in diversifying and administering one of the largest unified court system in the United States. Chief Judge Stephen J. Culliton has announced that four finalists have been selected to fill the vacancies created by the election of Judge Dorothy F. French and Judge Ronald D. Sutter to circuit judge. From these names, the circuit judges will select two appointees by secret ballot:

- Thomas A. Else
- Alexander F. McGimpsey

The Illinois Supreme Court has announced the appointments of Michael L. Stroh and James D. Orel to the position of associate judge. Stroh will reside in the 11th Judicial Circuit and Orel in the 18th. Mr. Stroh received his undergraduate degree in 1993 from Southern Illinois University and his Juris Doctor in 1996 from Southern Illinois University. He is currently affiliated with the Woodford County State’s Attorney’s Office in Eureka. Mr. Orel received his undergraduate degree in 1976 from Illinois State University and his Juris Doctor in 1983 from John Marshall in Chicago. He is currently engaged in practice with Garretson, Santora, Urgo & Nugent in Wheaton.

Montgomery with its Honorary Fellows Award and Warren Lupel with its Distinguished Service Award at the 2010 Fellows Award Breakfast on Friday morning. Montgomery and Lupel were also honored together in 2000 as Laureate Award Winners. IBF Past President Vince Cornelius presented the Honorary Fellow Award to Montgomery and Sean Berkowitz presented the Distinguished Service Award to Lupel. Click here to view photos from this event.

For the 70th straight year, the Illinois State Bar Association conferred the title of "Distinguished Counsellor" on members of the bar for 50 years. ISBA Past President Carole K. Bellows reminded her classmates of the incredible progress made in the area of civil rights since the class passed the bar in 1960.
The luncheon kicks off the ISBA/IBJ Joint Meeting taking place through Saturday at the Sheraton Chicago Hotel & Towers, 301 E. North Water in Chicago. A full schedule of events is available here.

His term will expire May 14, 2015. As a Circuit Judge, Perry Thompson presided over thousands of DUI, Traffic and criminal cases in DuPage County.

The Executive Committee of the Public Interest Law Initiative (PILI) announced last week that they have appointed ISBA YLD Council member Michael G. Bergmann as Executive Director as of December 1, 2010. Bergmann, who joined PILI in 2006 as Pro Bono Initiative Director, has most recently served as PILI’s Director of Programs where he expanded and advanced PILI’s Pro Bono Initiative and played a critical role in assuring the success of interns, fellows and alumni placement and educational programs. Bergmann further brings to the position his substantial knowledge of the Illinois pro bono community as well as the experience gained through his career long commitment to providing legal services to those in need. Bergmann obtained his Juris Doctor from DePaul University College of Law and his Bachelor of Arts from The Catholic University of America. Before joining PILI, Bergmann served as the Guardian Ad Litem Program Director for Chicago Volunteer Legal Services. During and before law school, he focused on project management and business development as a consultant with the Financial Planning Solutions Group of PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP. Bergmann currently serves as Chair-Elect of the American Bar Association Young Lawyers Division (YLD) and will become the Chair of the YLD during the 2011-12 bar year. He is also a member of the Illinois State Bar Association where he serves on the ISBA’s Assembly and Young Lawyers Division Council, is Immediate Past Chair of the Standing Committee on the Delivery of Legal Services, and previously held the position of Vice Chair of The Chicago Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Section. He additionally serves as a board member of several community organizations. Frequently recognized for his contributions to the profession and his service to the bar and public, Bergmann received the Kimball and Karen Anderson Public Interest Law Fellowship in 2005 from The Chicago Bar Foundation, and was named the 2006 ISBA YLD Young Lawyer of the Year from Cook County and the 2007 Outstanding Young Alumnus from DePaul University College of Law. “I am honored to have this opportunity to serve as PILI’s Executive Director and look forward to building on PILI’s proud history of successes, and its contributions to the highest ideals of our profession,” says Bergmann. “PILI’s role in the Illinois legal community is critical to helping address the vast unmet legal needs of the poor and underrepresented, and I look forward to working with our partner public interest law organizations, law schools, law firms, and corporations in meeting those needs.”
