Charles (Chuck) Mason Kierscht, 78, passed away peacefully at his home in Hinsdale, IL, surrounded by his loved ones on June 29, 2017. Born April 4, 1939 in Des Moines, Iowa, he was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Florence Kierscht. Chuck was the beloved husband of Marion, devoted and loving father to Charlie (Jennifer), Matthew (Brenda), Susan (Denny) Georgopulos, and Cynthia. Adored by his grandchildren, Michael, Alex, Ryan, Kennedy and Leah, he was proud and happy to be with them. Chuck received his bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of Iowa in 1960 and his J.D. from the University of Iowa College of Law in 1962. After proudly serving in the Navy, Chuck joined Kemper Financial Services as an attorney in 1966 and retired from the company in 1995 as chairman, president and CEO. Putting all others before himself, he generously gave his time volunteering for many organizations, including 26 years on the University of Iowa Foundation and 24 years on the Law School Foundation. He recently served as chairman of the Grant Park Music Festival, and chairman of Friends of the Forest Preserves in Cook County. His service also included support for the Field Museum, Boy Scouts of America, Chicago Urban League, the Crusade of Mercy/United Way, and the Greater Chicago Food Depository, among others. His smile and gentle manner will be missed by all who knew him.

James K. Curtin passed away peacefully July 14, 2017. Best friend and wonderful husband of Donna (nee Havle) for 57 years. Jim was born in Chicago November 4, 1935 to Thomas and Helen Curtin. Father of James W. (Rita) Curtin and Donna Lynn Curtin, grandfather of Bridget and Margaret Curtin, brother of Dolores (late Charles) Singleton, Audrey Curtin, Charles (Joan), late Thomas (late Phyllis), late John (Lucilla) and late William (Myrna Curtin Fry), uncle to several nieces and nephews. Teacher at Hyde Park HS, Kennedy King College, Becker CPA Review, and attorney and tax professional.

Robert Cowl Stewart passed away at 75 on July 20, 2017 at Rush Medical Center in Chicago after a three year struggle with cancer. He is lovingly survived by his two children, Dan and David Stewart, and four grandchildren: Hugh, Cole, McAllister ,and Louge Stewart. Robert was born in Leon, Iowa, on December 31, 1941, to John Cowl and Gene Louge Stewart. He graduated from Leon High School and then went on to the University of Iowa where he earned a J.D. in 1965. He was married in Iowa City to Marilyn Leuz in 1964 and they were happily married for 29 years until her passing in 1993. Bob loved to live life and try new things. As a child, he was always busy riding horses, being an Eagle Scout and playing his trombone. Later in life, he loved skiing, scuba diving, wine tasting, tracking family genealogy, and taking trips to new places with his loving partner of 20 years, Mary Prow. Robert had several successful careers: he was county attorney of Decatur County Iowa for ten years, a local futures trader at the Chicago Board of Trade, and then founder and president of a real estate management company for the remainder of his life.

Thomas A. Hickey, Jr. ("Tom") 78, died May 1, 2017 in Greenville, SC. Tom leaves behind Patricia, his wife of 56 years, his two daughters Sara (TenBroek) and Mary (McCauley), and grandchildren Jake, Tommy and Katie McCauley, and Grace and Elizabeth TenBroek. He also leaves behind his siblings John and David Hickey, Phyllis Howe and Marilyn Lolas, cousins, nieces, nephews, and many dear friends.
Born in Chicago on November 25, 1938, Tom was the eldest son of Ruth and Thomas Alanson Hickey. Growing up in Elgin, Tom attended Elgin High School where he was Class President and a graduate of Class of 1956. He entered Dartmouth College in New Hampshire and was chosen Sachem Orator for the graduating Class of 1960. Tom graduated from John Marshall Law School in 1967. He was licensed to practice law in Illinois and before the U.S. federal bench. Tom worked at American National Bank, G. H. Walker & Co. and G.H. Walker, Laird & Co., before joining the Union National Bank and Trust Company, in Joliet, Illinois, which was acquired by First Midwest Bancorp (FMBI). Tom rose to CEO of First Midwest Bank, Illinois where he was CEO, and a SVP and Director of First Midwest Bancorp. He was also Chairman and CEO of First Midwest Trust Company, Chairman of First Midwest Insurance Company and Chairman of First Midwest Asset Management Company. In 1993, Tom retired from FMBI and founded Prairie Asset Management Inc., an investment advisory business in Illinois. He was also an owner in several rural Illinois banks.

ISBA member and personal injury attorney Patrick Flaherty has been awarded a 2016 Trial Lawyer Excellence Award by the Jury Verdict Reporter. The annual Jury Verdict Reporter Awards for Trial Lawyer Excellence recognize case and career achievements of Illinois lawyers. Mr. Flaherty was one of only 13 Illinois lawyers to receive a JVR Award for case achievement in 2016. The awards were presented at an invitation-only ceremony at the Chicago Cultural Center in downtown Chicago.
Mr. Flaherty is an accomplished trial lawyer who has devoted his professional life to helping victims of negligence and wrongdoing. He has been a partner for many years at Kinnally Flaherty Krentz Loran Hodge & Masur, P.C., a well-regarded personal injury and commercial litigation law firm in Aurora, Illinois. The JVR Award was given to Mr. Flaherty for achieving the largest paraplegia verdict or settlement in Kane County history on behalf of a woman who became paralyzed due to the delayed diagnosis of a thoracic spinal infection. He has also obtained other record setting verdicts and settlements, including the highest birth injury award in Kane County and the highest wrongful death award in Will County.

ISBA member Thomas V. Linguanti, a leading federal court tax controversy trial lawyer, recently joined Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP's Chicago office as a partner. Mr. Linguanti, a former trial and appellate attorney in the Tax Division of the US Department of Justice, was the leader of the North American tax practice at his previous global law firm. His arrival brings additional recognition to the firm’s already top-ranked, market-leading tax practice.
Mr. Linguanti advises individual and corporate clients worldwide in developing strategies in disputes with the US Internal Revenue Service during audits, alternative dispute resolution proceedings, and trial and appellate litigation. He has represented tax clients before numerous federal courts and the US Tax Court and was the lead lawyer in Medtronic Inc. v. Commissioner, in which the court’s ruling slashed the medical device company’s tax deficiencies from $1.36 billion to $14 million in a transfer pricing dispute involving its Puerto Rico operations. The case is on appeal to the US Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit, with Mr. Linguanti as lead counsel.

A ceremony was held last Friday, August 4, dedicating the Vermilion County Courthouse in the name of Illinois Supreme Court Justice Rita B. Garman, who began her judicial career in as an associate judge there. Earlier this year, the Vermilion County board voted to rename the building to honor Garman's achievements and years of service. Hon. Russell Hartigan, ISBA president, attended.

Joseph Edward “Jock” Heaton Jr., 67, of Dixon, passed away Tuesday, June 27, 2017, at home surrounded by his beloved family, after a brief but courageous battle with cancer.
Jock was born Dec. 19, 1949, the son of Joseph and Mary Elizabeth “Bette” (Elmer) Heaton. He grew up in Dixon, and attended South Central Elementary School and Madison Elementary School. He graduated in 1968 from Dixon High School, where he was active in student government, sports, and music. He attended Indiana University, where he was a proud member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, and graduated in 1972 with a bachelor’s degree in business economics. He graduated in 1975 from The John Marshall Law School, with a Juris Doctor (JD) degree.
