The Illinois Supreme Court has announced the creation of the Illinois Judicial Conference’s (IJC) Criminal Indigent Defense Task Force (Task Force). The Task Force will be studying how to best provide for the constitutional guarantee of criminal defense for indigent defendants as a follow up to the report issued by the Sixth Amendment Center on the right to counsel in Illinois.

Chief Justice Mary Jane Theis and the Illinois Supreme Court announced today amendments to Illinois Rules of Professional Conduct 1.5 and 1.15. The amendments to the Rules are intended to address existing issues between the legal needs of the public and the lawyers who could serve them.

The Illinois Supreme Court Rules Committee will hear comments on three proposals on March 29, 2023, at a public hearing beginning at 10:30 a.m. in Room C-500 at the Michael A. Bilandic Building at 160 N. LaSalle Street in Chicago. All proposals must be approved by the Illinois Supreme Court before they can take effect.

The Illinois Supreme Court’s Statutory Court Fee Task Force (Task Force) announced today the release of its final report, a follow-up to the work of the first Task Force in 2016. The new report builds on the original Task Force recommendations that were aimed at reducing barriers to access to justice, expanding the availability of fee waivers to low-income litigants, and simplifying the system of court fees imposed in civil, criminal and traffic cases.

The Illinois Supreme Court today announced the expansion of e-filing to include quasi-criminal cases and electronic citations (e-Citations). This expansion beyond civil, criminal, and juvenile cases furthers the Supreme Court’s objective to utilize technology to reduce and streamline processes. It will be done in a permissive manner initially so counties can join as their technology allows.

Justice Mary K. O’Brien and the Supreme Court of Illinois have announced the appointment of Jennifer L. Barron as a Circuit Judge in the Eighteenth Judicial Circuit, DuPage County.
Ms. Barron is being appointed to fill the vacancy created by the appointment of Judge Linda E. Davenport to the Third District Appellate Court. The appointment takes effect on February 15, 2023, and will conclude December 2, 2024, following the November 2024 general election.

The Illinois Supreme Court Commission on Access to Justice (ATJ Commission) this week announced the formation and inaugural roster of the new Disability Access Committee (Committee).
The purpose of the new Committee is to guide the ATJ Commission in the development of policies and programming addressing the barriers to equitable access to our courts faced by individuals with disabilities.

The Michael A. Bilandic Building is re-opening today as the elevators were returned to service following repairs over the weekend. The State Fire Marshal inspected the site this morning and certified the elevators now meet all code and safety requirements.
